Volunteers Needed

The Association for Newcomers to Canada is looking for volunteers for the HOST Program. Many refugees and. immigrants are coming to PEI from the Former Yugoslavia, and are interested in meeting locals for friendship and English practice. The volunteer is asked to spend 2-3 hrs/week just hanging out.

UPEI Local Committee WUSC Profile

Jolyn Campbell, a first year student at the University of Prince Edward Island and resi- dent of Clyde River, is joining 29 other stu- dents and3 faculty advisors from across Canada on a study seminar in Vietnam being held during May and June of 1995. Jolyn is an active member of the WUSC (World Univer- sity Service of Canada) Local Committee at the University of Prince Edward Island.

The Seminar is designed to give Cana- dian university and college students their first experience in a developing country and to create greater awareness of international de- velopment issues among the participants, the academic community and the general public.

The Seminar programme began with an international seminar in post-war Germany in 1948. Since then, over 1800 Canadian stu- dents and faculty have participated in this cross-cultural programme. WUSC Seminars have taken place in Africa, Central and South America, Asia and Eastern Europe.

WUSC was founded in 1939 and incor- porated in 1957, as a non~profit, non-govern- mental organization which fosters community development, refugee assistance and educa- tional exchanges at home and abroad.

The programmes of WUSC are sup- ported by various levels of the Government of Canada, post-secondary institutions, faculty and students, business and industry, as well as individuals across the country. —

For All: From Rights to Reality’’. WUSC Local Committee delegates from across At- lantic Canada were hosted by the UPEI Local Committee.

As part of this symposium, two interna- tional guest speakers took part in a public meeting on the theme, Access to Education: Fatima Freire Dowbor, an educational special- ist and teacher from Brazil shared her experi- ence in teaching in Latin America. John Hardbattle, affiliated with indigenous NGOs (Non-governmental organizations), examined the challenges facing indigenous peoples and education globally.

Jolyn is presently fundraising to cover a portion of the costs of participation in the Vietnam Seminar (60% of the costs are cov- ered by WUSC National and CIDA). While in Vietnam, she will be studying the social devel- opment of women in Vietnamese society.

Other Canadian students will study is- sues in health care and demography, educa- tion, arts and culture, social and economic development, and environment and resources. As a seminar participant, Jolyn plans to con- tinue her active involvement in her commu- nity upon her return, continue her studies at UPEI and her involvement with the Local Committee, and speak about her experiences with others. Hopefully, it will be one more means of opening the window on the world for other UPEI students. WUSC can offer many other challenges to students willing to work on development issues including opportunities to either work or study abroad.

SCHOLARSHIPS 1995-1996

AMOUNT: Two $3,000 scholarships (donated by the Canadian Labour Congress and Mr. David Heaps)

A.A. Heaps was one of the leaders of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 and a Labour alderman in Winnipeg, where he con-

tributed substantially to the betterment of the city. In 1925, he was elected a member of Parliament in Ottawa, where he and J.S. Woodsworth held the balance of power. It was largely through the efforts of A.A. Heaps that Unemployment Insurance and Old Age Secu- rity were established - social legislation which has now become an integral part of the Cana- dian way of life.

TENURE: The award is open to applicants undertaking full-time undergraduate or gradu- ate studies at a Canadian university or college during the academic year 1995-1996. ELIGIBILITY: Those eligible are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants of any age who, through their work or involvement in the com- munity, have demonstrated maturity and a commitment to the social ideals which charac- terized the life of A.A. Heaps.

DEADLINE: Applications must be _post- marked by May 15, 1995. Applicants will receive a letter acknowledging receipt of ap- plication. Any inquiries with respect to the status of applications must be put in writing. The successful candidate will be notified by July 14, 1995, : PROCEDURE: Applicants must submit a typed essay of 500-1000 words, outlining his or her education, employment history, background in community work and commitment to social ideals.

Applicant’s essay should show a knowl- edge regarding the contribution which A.A. Heaps made in the field of social reform. The Rebel In The House: The Life and Times of A.A. Heaps, M.P., by Leo Heaps can be found in most university, college or public libraries. The applicant’s financial circumstances should also be indicated since the award will take financial need into account.

Applicants must include the name, ad- dress and telephone number of two references who are prominent in the community and knowledgeable about the applicant’s back- ground and dedication to th philosophy under-

lying the scholarship. Letters may be re- quested from the references.
