Hamilton Rowen, on his way to . olyhead, stopped to dine at a little ran at Capel Curring. There was nothing in the house but a shoulder of mutton, which Rowan ordered to be roasted. Presently the master of a neighbouring hunt, with two bro- ther Nimrods, rushed into an adjoin- ing room and swearing they were half starved, clamorously demanded what tney could have for dinner.

The landlord, with many apolo- gies, told them he had nothing but bread and cheese to offer them.

‘ I’m extremely sorry gentlemen,’

said the landlord, much embarrassed, ‘ but—’

‘ How d’ye mean, sir?’ interrupted the master of the hunt, imperiously. 'B -—-!I don’t understand this, Gwilliam? Nothing but bread and cheese to offer us! something roastingfi-r your kitchen at this very moment sir.’

They all said they smelt it.

' Why, that’s very true, gentle- men,’ said the landlord, still more embarrassed.‘ ‘ There certainly is a shoulder of mutton at the tire, and l wish with all my heart I could let your honors have it; but, unfortunate- ly, it’s bespoke by. ‘ man in the next room art :a‘ -

‘ A what? An Irish ~gentleman. did you say, Gwrlliam?’ roared out the master with a sneer.

Here the landlord was interrupted by a perfect mouth-quake of laugh- ter. in which the whole trio joined.

Pray, what’s this Irish gentleman like?’ demanded the Squire, as soon as he could speak, ‘ Has he been tong caught? Has he lost his tail yet? Oh! for mercy sake! do tell us -has he lost his tail yet, Gwilliam?’

' Aye, has he lost his tail yet, Gwillianil’ echoed the others; and again they laughed most outrageous-

, “Indeed, gentlemen —--—-,’continued the landlord.

‘ No more of this,’ said the Squire, cutting him short, ' unless you mean to make us sick, sir. Go! send the mutton into us, and let the lrish gentleman have a Welsh rabbit. And d’ye hear,’ continued be pulling out a tine old family repeater, and put- ting it into the landlords hands, 'take this into him with my compliments, and ask him if can he tellwhat time of day it is by it. Got—go, sir! do as I order you, orit shall be worse for on!’ ' -

We refer our readers, however, to the extracts which we have made in this day‘s paper, and which will be found, at least, interesting.

ENGLAND.

Tun Carrots market is depressed. the business transacted is limited, prices have a downward tendency, and holders, evidently not at ease, show a desire to accept the current rates,aud to press-their stocks. The sales ot‘tlie week, ending on Friday, only amounted to 20,000 bales, and limited as this business is,it was even more restricted yesterday,—for not more than L300 to 2000 bags chang- ed hands.—A variety of causes may be adducted to account for the present stagnation. Foremost is the railway madness. Again, there is the fearful deficiency inthe potatoe crop, and .a bad grain harvest— Then there is the rise in the rate of interest by the Bank of England, which points, amongst the other breakers a head, to a scarcity of money, and the derangement oi the exchanges, consequent on the large sums of gold constantly leavingthe country to invest incontinental rail- ways.—Fina|ly, there is the pros- pects ofthe new crop in the United States, respecting which there is but little anxiety felt.-——'l‘he state of trade in the manufacturing districts, does not certainly give an indication of the existing feeling in the Cotton market. The trade is less brisk than it has beam—The money market allows symptoms of wavering under the black (lands which appear in the distance.
