The census of paupers in London, ex- clusive of lunatics, in asylums and vagrants for the first week of July shows: Indoor, 52,816; outdoor, 35,029; total, 87,845; against 83,849 for the corresponding week of 1886. These are rather startling figures.

Cincinnatti is to have a monument to the memory of President Harrison. Artists are now at work on the designs, and a selec- tion will soon be made. The statue will be unveilea in the fal! of 1888, on the centen- nial anniversary of the city of Cincinnatti.

At Kamouroska, Q., afew days ago, a boy, not knowing it was loaded, pointed a gun at some children with whom he was playing, when the cap exploded and the gun was discharged. One child was shot in the stomach and another in the arm. It is thought both will recover.

The schooner Dido,of and from St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, bound to New York, has been abandoned at sea and the crew landed on the coast of Carolina. She was built at Summerside, P. E. Island, in 1882, was 120 tons register, and was insured in Halifax

for about $5,000.

The report of the Deputy Minister of Finance states that silver to the value of $185,000, and copper to the value of $23,- 000 were imported by the Dominion, and the profits realized amounted to $55,150, a sum almost equal to the salaries of the Department for the year.

An autopsy on the body cf a young man in New York, who had been in the habit of smoking sixty cigarettes a day, showed that he died from congestion of the brain. The doctors may be right, but it is hard to believe that a man who smoked sixty cigar- ettes a day ever had any brains at all.

A wonderful invention in the shape of a portable telephone has just been made known by two Belgians. The machinery consists of a copper wire and a small bat- tery to be carried in the pocket. When required to communicate with persons at a distance the wires are simply stuck in the ground.

King Otto of Bavaria is crazy on the sub- ject of shooting people. Every day he is allowed to take a gun containing a blank cartridge, and fire at a man who is pur- posely skulking among the trees on the Nymphenburg palace. The man falls as if killed, and the mad king’s desire is appeas- ed for the day.

It is not generally known that in Ethi- opiaa people numbering about 200,000 have the Old Testament in Ethiopic version and still adhere strictly to the Mo- saic ceremonies and laws. They are the children of Hebrew immigrants who in the time of the great dispersion settled in Abys- sinia and married wives of that nation.

The manufacture of corsets is becoming a most important industry in Wurtemberg, about 10,000 people being now engaged in the trade. Large quantities of woven cor- sets are exported to Brazil, La Plata, Eng- land and the United States. The amount sent to the last named country is, however, less now than previously, as the United States has also begun to manufacture this atticie.
