SurposepD DROWNING AccrpENt.—A Mag- dalen despatch of the 16th says: ‘“Two men belonging tothe schr. ‘Adelaide,’ of Summer- side, P. i L., lying at anchor in Pleasant Bay, left the vessel last evening to go on shore and visit some friends. ‘They left the house they had been visting at about 11 o’clock, p.m., to return on board their vessel, since which time they have not been seen. A dory is missing from the beech this morning, and it is sup- posed in attempting to return to their vessel they were capsized and drowned, or driven out to sea, as the wind was blowing from the westward during the night.

Tue necessity of organizing a society for the. prevention of cruelty to,animals, in this city, is every day becoming more and more apparent. Time and again we see instances which require the redress demanded by such

asociety. But the protection of dumb animals :

from the heartless cruelties perpetrated by their owners is a matter of law as much asa matter fo:aS. P. C. A. Then why do not the officers of the law become more vigilant? Why dothey not punish every unfeeling wretch they see ill-using dumb animals, Yesterday a trackman passed through our streets driving a horse, attashed to sloven, which was loaded with sixteen barrels of flour. The Civic bye- law distinctly states that ‘‘six barrels of flour shall b> deemedas composing a load."’ The in- dividual to which we refer carries but two barrels short-of three time that number, and with all on board asks his neighbor to ‘“‘help his team up the hill.” Again, we often see an individual (iriving the mere skin-covered frame of a horse through our streets. Many times we see this sorrowful-looking animal loaded with coal, the driver perched upon the cart, instead of helping in an odd turn of the wheel. With reins in hand, this heartless human jerks the bit against the toothless gums of the infirm quadruped, while the weight of his lazy carcass aided to the load, apparently bends the back of the animal in such a manner as would lead the spectator to believe it is cracking and about to break. These are two ef many instances which we could quote had we space at our di We hope the author- ities will take this matter in hand, and justly punish the crucl offenders,

Orrawa, Sept. 22. $ The Dominion Shooting Match was fin- ished today. The Princess presented the prizes in the Senate Chamber this after- neon.

The Island Team secured twenty indi- vidual prizes.

Private Dover won first prize in Minister of Militia’s competition. Sergeant Mac- dougall won two prizes and badge in the Governor-General’s Match, and is sixth in the Wimbledon Team. Two hundred and fifty competitors entered. In the shooting averages the Island Team did remarkably well ; but was at a disadvantage in compet- ing against the other Provinces, because of the small number sent here. The Team leaves for home to morrow.
