QUEEN'S COUNTY'S OYSTER TRADE

WHAT THE DEALERSSAY ABOUT THEIR SHIPMENTS. Valuable Information Regarding the

Oyster and its Environments.

The ex'ent to which the oyster trade has been developed in thie province during the past few years is not generel'y ko«wwn. Iodeed there are few persous outside those in the trade who have asything like an accurate idea of the oyster fisheries and the ever-growing importance of the traffic in the delicious bivalves.

With a view to placing a few facts re» garding this industry in this section of the

province befure the public Tue Ex- AMINER has been interrogating those who handle this popular shell-fish and

from them has been obtained the data upon which this article is based. Regarding the trade ix other sections information will be forthcoming Jater on.

Fifteen years ago Charlottetown received all oysters for loca] use from RichmoadBay. About 1885, Mr. L. P. Tanton, one of the pioueers of the trade in this section, made severe! importations from Summerside of from thirty to forty barrels each, all cf which were used in thecity. It was in 1888 that Mr. Tanton made his first ship- ment to points outside the province.

The exports from Charlottetown at that date would be in the vicinity of fifteen bar- rels worth about $100. By gradual de- velopment this export bas increased until now the annual product of the waters of

teeen 8,000 and 9,000 barrels, the value of, which may be ronghly placed at $20,000

It isestimated that from 1000 to 1500 barrels of these oysters go in'o local con-~ sumption aud the remainder are shipped abroad, most largely to Montreal and Quebec and to a lesser exient to almost

ev'ry Canadian city eastof Toronto as well as to Newfoundland and St. Pierre.

Mr. Tanton’s first shipment of five

barrels in the Lake Winnipeg did not show apy advantage in pointof price over Canadiau merkets. His second lot of forty-one barrel< now in transit embraces samples of different varieties and suould aff. rl vaiuable intormation as to the Engl'shmen’s taster. If even a fair mark- et can be obtained intheold country for our surplus stock it will go» long way to prevent those heavy josses which at times astail the ehippers wost fiercely.

Tue dealers are cf the opinion that the most valuable oyster in the county comes from North River. Butthe eupply from this source bas been very emall this year, being estimated at from 390 t» 400 barrela. These brought oo an average about $3.50 per barrel at the shore. The season’s value of this fi-hieg ground aloneis be~ lieved to be in the vicinity of $14,000. Next in order comes West River, Pownal, Alexandria, Cherry Valley, Orwell, Vernon River, and John+etoao’s River. The largest fisheries are Orwell and West and Kast Rivers. The latter, it is claimed, pre ducethe poorert quality, although in certain sec- tions some very fine siock is found.

Mr. Tanton’s purchases for the year, taking in both spring and fail, totale about 2,400 barrel«. Last week he took in 208 barrels, and with mild weather he expects to reach the 3,000 mark before the close of navigation.

It 1s the opiuion of Mr Tanton*that a matured oyster should be allowed to be taken at any time outside of the spawn= ing season. The severest penalty should, in bis opinioo, be imposed upou those who handle oysters be ow the legal size, as such action destroys the market as well as the beds. He believes that ther Gov- ernment should take in hand the work of planting oyster beds slong our shores.

Itis Mr. Tantou’. belie? that the outpat cannot possibly increase, if indeed the beds Can muintain the present demaod upon their resources. The crudest methods of hand- ling are still in vogue, but by the exercvive of judgment on the part of all coucerned there is no reason why the value of this article cannot be immensely increased.

Mr. Michael Trainor is another trader who has been handling oysters for several] yearsand ia we] sinformed regarding the industry and its importance to the com- munitv. He made bis first shipment abroad in 1£91, and each succeeding year he has made additions to bis exports in that Jine. This year he bas shipped 1,600 barrels and he expects to bandle at least 206 bar- rels more before the close of the season. The oysters shipped by him were,as a rule, the best obtainable, and he places thei:
