The moment the steamer was signalized the entire popu- lation of the city and suburbs were astir—and their Lordships landed amid the ringing of bells, the firing of guns, and the enthusiastic “cheers of the people. They were met at the wharf by the Right Rey. Dr. Mullock, 1fumerous clergymen, by the Benevolent Irish Society, the Society of Mechanics, and by all the most eminent of our citizens; being seated in carriages provided fer ‘their Lordships, they were escorted through Water Street, up Cochrane Street, and by the Military Road to the Cathedral, where they knelt for a short time before the High Altar in silent prayer ; after which the Arch- bishop thanked the people for their kind reception, and Bishop Mullock afterwards did the same. The Archbishop and Bishops were then conducted to his palace by Dr. Mulloc.

To attempt to give an idea of the exultation of the people on this oceasion would be in vain. We never witnessed any- thing so gratifying, yet so perfectly indescribable. The night was very dark, but an almost universal illumination took place instantaneously, as if by magic, all along the line of march, and a triumphal arch, erected across the Military Road, was decorated with apparently a hundred lamps, multiplying them- selves by their teilliancy-—thens, with numerous lighted flambeaus, carried at intervals by the people, the music of the Brass Band of the Royal Newfoundland Companies, the rapid firing of guns, and the wild cheering of the population, had an exciting and novel effect.

Almost every day since the arrival of theseeminent Divines, they have received the attentions and hospitalities of the more prominent of the Catholic community, and the homage of all.
