Tue Literary and Scientific Society had a very interesting meeting last night. Mr. Rattenbury read selections from Hamlet and Julius Caesar in a manner that elicited well merited applause. Mr. Reddin read. the history of ‘‘ Richard Double Dick,” The reader aimed to convey to the andience not only the words of the author, but the sentiment and pathos as well, and he emi- nently succeeded. Selections were also presented by Mesers. Harris, McDonald and others, which was followed bry a general and lively discussion.

Tur Northwest half-breeds held a public meeting at St. Laurent, on Saturdey, leading men from all the French parishes being pre- sent. Resolutions were adopted, thanking the Goverument in warm terms for the hamane msnner mm which the half-breeds had been treated sioce last spring. It waa de- cided that the half-breeds should, ask the Goveromest for a free grant of thYir lands, basing their claim on beirg the original pos- sessors. They will also ask that industrial schoola for half-breed children be established in the district, that amnesty be extended to the half-breeds in prison and across the border, that naturatization be made more accessible and that electoral districts be erected in French settlements. Riel'’s name was not mentioned in any way by any of the speakers during or after the meeting,

Durinc the excitement of the fire on Wednesday night, one of the unfortunate sufferers, Mre. Wayman, catching up her children, rushed out, clad only in her night-clothes. Soon after reaching the sidewalk she remembered that the pocket of her dress, which she had left behind, contained a, to her, large sum of money, some $17, which she had been paid for ser- vices only the same evening. In answer to her frenzied entreaties to at least save that, Dr. Robins gallantly made an at- tempt. Placing a ladder to the upper window, the Doctor forced his way into the room, but, jast as he was within grasping distence of the dress, the burning floor gave way, and he was precipitated to the floor below. The horrified spectators though? that he must have been killed, and were much relieved to observe the doetor emerging unhurt from the debris, but un- fortunately without the poor woman’s aLL which he had so bravely attempted to resote.

‘Protection of Fisheries.

Revising Barristers and the Government.

Orrawa, March 4.

The Department of Fisheries will to-day issue an advertisement stating that tenders will be received up to the 25th inst., for the charter of six swift ssiling fore-and-aft schooners of between 60 and 90 tons register, six years old. These vessels are to be employed as a fisheries police force on the coasts of Cavada. They will be manned and officered in conjunction with such of the Dominion steamers as may be employed and will enforce the law of the country respecting inshore fisheries. The Government are thus showing their deter- taination to do their duty by the fishermen in case nothing comes of the negotiations between the United States and Canada.

The House met to-day at 3.30. Several bills were introduced. The debate was re- sumed on Casey’s motion for the circulars and instructions issued by the Government to revising officers. M. Cameron continu- ing the attack on the revising officers, the Government and everything in general. The motion passed. The Houss adjourned at 6 o'clock,

The New York Horse Car Strike.

New Youre March 4.

Striking horse car employees are making things pretty lively just now. This after- noon a car was started from East River. Police Superintendent Murray and Tnspec- tor, and 1,200 police were in line to protect it, and when the car started six platoons of police led the way followed by the car surrounded by policemen. They were hooted at, pelted with rotten eggs, stones and all sorts of missiles. The return trip was made without much diffeulty. 3
