Favors Earlier Closing of Vendor's

Closing of all Island liquor stores by 5:30 in the afternoon. includ- ing Saturdays. was favored by the Federation of Agriculture in its annual brief presented to the Legigslature yesterday afternoon.

While the brief noted that Saturdays. s. traditional relaxa- tion day for rural residents, gave people a. chance to visit liquor stores. it also observed that with alcoholic stlrnulants highway Ic- cidents tended to increase. The brief also made mention oi the fact that while an earlier closing hour might tend to increase illicit traffic in liquor the Federation felt that police officer: are fully culpable oi controlling the situ- st on. -

Blaine Porridge For Death of Girl

TORONTO. (CF)-A smallquan- tity of porridge lodged in her wind pipe killed 12-year-old Betty Reid as she was on her way to school. a medical examiner said 'I'hursday.

She collapsed on the sidewalk Wednesday and died en route to hospital.

Dr. Wilfred Christie. who per- formed an autopsy. said there was nothing her parents could have done to prevent the accident. He said food sometimes lodges in the larynx and bronchial systems and effects the nerves which sends the heart into a spasm, causing death.

Slarls On New Homes Decline

OTTAWA, (C?) - Construction starts on new Jiomes declined 16.5 per cent in January compared with A year earlier.

However, the Bureau of Stalls- tics reported Thursday. comple- tions rose more than 36 per cent. The number of dwellings under construction at the end of the month was up slightly from last year.

Starts were made on construc- tion of 2.983 dwelling unit: in January compared with 3.573 in January 1953, and completions num- bered 8.3l5 compared with 6.101 This left 54.243 units still under conatnrction at the end of January compared with 53.016.

Under constniction at the end of January were 22.039 units in Ontario compared with 19.971 in year earlier; Quebec 12.177 (12.- 69ll); British Columbia 5.449 (5.' 026): prairie provinces 9.359 fl).- Vlm: and the Atlantic provinces 5.224 (5.529).

"We built more roads at less cost last year than were ever built before in this Province in one year.' stated Hon. Dougald Macxlnnon. Minister of Public Works and Highways who spoke in the Legis- lature last night on the Draft Ad- dress debate.

"At our present rate of work I would say that within three or four years the roads left to improve in the Province will only amount to a trifle." stated the Minister.

"During 1953 the Public Works Department completed 199.8 miles of road at a total cost of 5923.258 or an average cost per mile of 54.- 825." he stated.

"We didn't figure we'd ever ac- complish this." he continued. "It shows a reduction in our costs of about 506:. over the work done ten years ago and it shows efficiency and cooperation all along the line in the Department. It is a marvel- lous record.

"Last year I stated that I would be as fair to everyone as possible and I am amazed as how closely we stuck to that principle." he said and he quoted figures to show that each county had received about the same amount of road improvement.

Mr. Macxcinnon, a member of the Northumberland Ferris Com- pany Limited, stated the Com- pany could purchase a good boat in British Columbia and put the ship in operation at the cost of about one quarter of I. million dollars. "This boat would carry more than the other two put to- gether." stated the Minister.

Mr. Macxinnon stated he was worried about the Wood Islands- Caribou service and its future asa means of valuable transportation service to the farmers of the Pro- vince.

Members of the Federation of Agriculture met yesterday with the Provincial Legislature in the Legislative Chamber to present the annualbrief. There weremany subjects covered. ranging from a plebiscite on the Potato Marketing Board to the establishment of an artificial insemination unit.

It was stated in a separate sheet with the brief that it was the intention of the Provincial Board of Direcors of the Federation to immediately recommend that the Provincial Marketing Board in- struct the P.E.l. Potato Market- ing Board to hold a plebiscite of the registered and licensed potato producers on the potato market- ing scheme at the earliest possible date.

Federation members present and speaking briefly generally express- ed approval of the scheme, but still felt that farmers should have an opportunity of expressing their views.

The brief was read to the Legis- latudre by Mr. Roland MacDonald. Southport. president of the Fed- eration of Agriculture.
