LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
A Mach Governed Province.
Sir,—In whatever else there may be ecarcity, there is one thing at least, in res- pect of which Prince Edward Island is blessed with an abundance. ‘‘In the mul- titude of counsellers there is safety,” said the wisest man that ever lived. The se- curity of the country is therefore assured, if numbers may be accepted as a substitute for wisdom. ‘hough the smallest province of the Dowinicn, and with local interests corresponding to its dimensions, it yet bears the proud distiuction of having, in proportion toits population, the greatest number of legislators of any country ia the world, as may be seen by the following comparisons: Ontario, the greatest in wealth and population of any province of the Dominion, has one local representative for every 23,500 cf her population. Quebec has one for every 15,700. Great Britain, legislating in the interests cf a world wide empire, and with all her complicated domestic and foreign affairs, has one rep- resentative for every 33,000. Prince Ed ward Island can afford the luxury of one for every 2,500 of her population. Neithex the condition of our financial resources, nox the pressing importance of our loca! inter- ests, require the services of a doubie- barreled chamber of forty-three members, and there is no intelligent person but is convinced that the work of legislation could be as efficiently performed by less than half that number, and no reasonable meas- ure tothat end but would meet with gen- eral acceptance throughout the Province. That the legislative machine is too cum ber- some for our present needs is unquestioned, and we would suggest for its simplification some such scheme as follows :—
1. Abolition of our imitation House of Lords;
2. A reduction of the Legislative Assembly to eighteen members, to be elected by man- hood suffrage.
3. Biennial sessions,
4. Members to be paid on a descending scale at some such rate as follows: Two dollars and fifty cents per day for the first two weeks of the session ; two dollars per day for the next two weeks, and one dollar and fifty cents per day for the two weeks following, no further payment to be made for a continuance of the session beyond this time,

The saving effected by the reduction of the legislative machinery, and the adoption of biennial sessions, together with the respun- sibilities assumed by the municipalities, would afford the Local Government relief to an amount nearly, if not quite, as much as the present yearly deficit.
A reduction in the number of our repre- sentatives, and in the expenses of legisla- tion, is a measure imperatively called for. But the greatest cbstacle in the way of its adoption would be the unwillingness of political leaders to detract from their own importance, and of political aspirants to limit the chances of success which suck a reduction would involve. But we may reasonably ask, what is the end and aim of government? Is it merely to sustain a machiaoe, the expenses of which are out of all proportion to the revenue collected and the services rendered? Or is it rather in- tended to serve the best interests of society, and, by adapting means to existing wants, make government less necessary! If the latter be its object, in no way can it be more readily accomplished than by simpli- fying the legislative machinery, and thus lightening the burdens of the people.

Here are two men, whose lives are devoted to unravelling perplexing questions, separat- ing the dross from the baser metal, figura- tively speaking, so that less cultured minds may realize and grasp the true meaning of that beautiful symbol, ‘Justice holding the balance.” One of the above gentle- men, too, gives his time and talents in gov- erning the city. Between the calibre of these gentlemen, and Mr. Joseph Murdoch there is a vast gulf. Mr. Murdoch reaches the acme of his ideal, when he perpetrates a joke at the expense of one of the com- pany. To gel ths better of someone in a jocular manner is both meat and drink to him, and the smile that illuminates his countenance on such events, is beyond des- cription.

Toronto, Jan. 25.—A most interesting case has come to light here, being that of Mrs. Brown, of Agnes St., who for years Las suffered from Hright’s Disease, the last two of which she spent in bed. Her feet were swollen 30 she could not walk, and being affected with paralysis she was taken to the Toronto General Hospital, where, after undergoing a lengthened treatment which did her no good, and receiving nothing inthe way of consolation save a certificate that she was incurable and a permit admitting her to the Home for In- curables. Even then she did mot give up hope and tried Homcepathic treatment, but with as little results as the other. There seemed nothing left but to go tothat retreat where only those who are beyond sl] human aid are admitted, and there wait for death to releve her of her sufferings. She heard of that wonderful eure of Sam Murray, of Gravenhurst, by Dodd’s Kidney Pills, and she decided to try them. The first week she noticed very little change, but before she had finished the second box her back began tu feel easier, the swelling to leave her feet, and by the third week she covwld walk, something she had been unable to do for two years before. Now, after taking Dodd’s Kidney Pills for two months she is so completely cured that she is about t: take up school teaching again, a calling she pursued before losing her health. ; ee
