In a letter to the London 7imes re cently, Mr. Hoyle, a promivent English temperance advocate, furnished some statistics showing the immense amount expended on intoxicating Great Britain, and the effect which the nation’s drinking habits bave had on crime and pauperism. The figures given are ofa startling character.
Last year the total amount expended in drinking was £125,477,275, or about $611,700.000. Of this, about $188, 150,000 was spent on whiskey, early 37,000,000 of that intoxicating being consumed. Imported wines,which ente: ed into consumption, cost $65,000,000, the quantity consumed being about 14, 500,000 gallons. British “wines” to the
value of about $7,300,000 were drank
liquors in
during the year. But the largest ex- penditure was ip beer, no less than $343,000,000 being spent in its con
sumption, which reached the enormous quantity of 985,809,440 gallons.
Considering how far the drinking habits of the people affected the amount of crime and pauperism,it is foued there was, from 1860 to 1882, an increase ol 62 percent. in erime. The expendi- ture in liquor increased over 47 per ceot. in the same period, while the population showed an augmentation of but 22 percent. The aumber of lunatics in asylums in England and Wales in creased from 38,058 in 1860, to 73,113 in 1882. In 1860 poor relief cost £5,- 454,965 in 1882, £8,232,472.
When we compare the liquor expen diture of Great Buitain with that of Canada and the United States, we fiod that the censumption of whiskey is greatest per head in the United States, being about one and a half gallons, while in Canada it isless than one gal- lon, and io Great Britain a little over one gallon. The wine consumed in Great Britain amoun‘s to about a third of a gallon per head; ia Canada, a quar- ter of a gallon; in the United States, at least a gallon per capite. The consump- tion of beer per head is said to stand about as follows:—Britain, 27} gallons; United States, 93; Canada, 3 gallons. The total expenditure for liquors of every kind, according to Mr. Hoyle’s statistics for Britain, and according to the Toronto Globe's calculations for Canada and the United States, is per <Apita as foilows:—Great Britain, $17.- 25; United States, $16.664; Canada, $6.- 334. These figures show that Can- adians are three times as temperate as the British. But itis only fair to say that for tho past seven years the con- sumption of liquor has been decreasing in Britain, the expenditure for 1883 being about $7,766,000 lessthaa in 1821, while the decrease between 1876 and 1883 reaehed $104,000,000. °

When one of the cases instituted in Montreal by workmen against the Canadian Pacifié Railway Company, and which was fixed for trial during the past week, waa called in its turn, the plaintiff's attorney made application to postpone the hearing, ashis witnesses were not at hand and his client was still in the West. The Company's attorney resisted the application,as they were ready to go on, and had witnesses, to prove that the matter was an imposi- tion and that work had been offered had the plaintiff been willing to accept it. Judge Mousseau dismissed the action with cost sams recours ; and it sub sequently appeared that the suit was taken out by the plaintiff's father who expected te get $30 or $40 in settle- ment, and that the man is still working
