CONDITION IMPROVED - Mr. Louis Carragher, Lot 05, who taken to the Charlottetown Hospital Monday suffering from head in- juries received while working in his father's saw mill at that place. was reported last evening as much improved. X-rays taken disclosed that there were no fractures as a. result oi the severe blow back of the car which rendered him un- conscious for 36 hours

HARTLAND. N.B. - A gradual increase in movement of the ear- ly potato variety. the Irish Cob- bied in Carleton County has been noted during the past week, and it" is reported that a carloiiid a day has been shipped to the Que- bec-Ontario market.

These potatoes are now selling on both markets on s competi- tive basis. Dlgging of the early variety is well along now, with a steady flow to the markets. The cobbler crop has been rated as of good quality with an approxi- mate yield of 100 barrels an acre. The price outlook now appears brighter, but it is reported the price per barrel varies somewhat from dealer to dealer. As no out- standing shipments have been made, an average price is difficult to figure.

While the local picture of the early varieties fluctuates from day to day, more concern by grow- ers and shippers is now being placed on the latter and main crop, following announcement of the reopening of the Argentine market. which has been clost-d for three years for certified seed po- tatocs from this area.

It has been said that both growers and shippers are holding an optimistic view towards the new demand and if sufficient are sold, it will place lesser amounts of seed potatoes on the local mur- kct next season. Thus, a boost in price is seen for the producer.

Uruguay is one of the most im- portant seed potato markets in South America, as far as Canada is concerned, and the bulk of that country's tuhor imports are ship- ped from New Brunswick. Annual purchases have run as high as 5300.000 It is thought that Uru- guay will call on Canada for es- sential seed requirements again this year. Katalidins. Pontiac and to an increasingly larger extent. Kenncbecs are the most popular varieties on the Latin American market.

Large Increases

Large increases in both I-'-W Brunswick and P. E. I. are ex- pected this year be certified seed potatoes, as well as across Can- ada, and if the entire production of certified seed is free of dis- ease, this would be the biggest acreage since the all-time high of 75.000 acres planted in 1950 in the Dominion. Last year. Can- adian farmers planted about 46,- 000 acrcs of seed while this year

Island Cadet

Cadet Major Jimmie MacQuar- rie oi the Queen Square School Cadet Corps. son of Mr. and Mrs. Hector MacQuarrie, Charlottetown. returned home from Banff, Alber- ta. last week alter undergoing is three weeks training program in the westernmost of the Prairie Provinces.

Macquarrie, who was the only Island cadet attending the camp. was one of the 156 boys from across the Dominion who were selected to undergo special train-

Selection for the camp. known as the Master Cadet Camp, came as a reward for outstanding ability in cadet work and it. is the high- est honor that can be won in the cadet corps. The camp is regarded as a model camp for the remain- der of the Dominion.

Jimmie. along with the rast oi the cadets, spent three weeks in the Banff area. Prior to that he spent ten days training at Alder- shot in company with fifteen otlie.r cadets from the Maritimss. S

At. Banff the boys spent one week in training on the grounds. another living in the woods and the third on a tour of interesting places in the West! Among the places the boys visited were the famous summer resort Lake Louise, the Radium Hot Springs in Brit- ish Columbia and the Upper Hot Springs in Alberta.

The boys were guests of honor on several occasions at the Bani! springs Hotel. This was one of the highlights of the trip as the cadets were given royal treatment by the hotel management and the guests.

Another highlight of the camp was the inspection of the cadets by Major-General Vokes from the Western Command Headquarters.
