Students have mixed feelings about the new super quiet policy at Robert- son Library, which was im- plemented at the beginning of second semester this year.

Though most students feel it is a good idea to have the study carrels designated as super quiet, they feel the upstairs lobby should not be designated as such.

VICTORIA (CUP) — Flags flew at half mast last week at the Univer- sity of Victoria in memory of two UVic rowers who died in a storm during a practice on Friday January 15.

Gareth Lineen and Daryl Smith, both 19, were among the 18 junior varsity rowers

ywho were thrown into the four degree celcius waters of Elk Lake when their sculls were swamped during a rou- tine rowing practice.

Coach Lorna Ferguson had ordered the boats to re- turn to shore after seeing whitecaps at the far end of the lake. She then ensured a pair (two person craft) that was also on the lake was

essary because people in the

carrels can hear the noise even when the doors are

closed. “Since sound

goes through cement walls, it is necesssary to have the lobby a quiet area as well”, said Ms. Stright.

Suzanne Manovill, Cir- culation Supervisor, said the policy was implemented at the request of many students who complained that they were unable to study because of the excess noise.

Most students say they

use the library more or at _

least as much as they did be- fore, though not necessarily because of the new policy.

“T study there because I have more work to do, but the quiet does make it easier to study,” said one student.

Ms. Stright says the new policy will not cause any se- rious students to stop us- ing the library, but those

who use it for socializing may spend less time there.

A helicopter was called from up island, but could not fly to the site due to high winds. A coast guard helicopter arrived later, and scanned the lake with bright search lights, only to be forced away 15 minutes later by high winds.

The search was called off at 9 p.m.

Later friday night, five of the rowers were released from the hospital, while two others remained until Satur- day morning. Daryl Smith, from Youbou, BC, died Fri- day night from hypothermia.

The search for Levine’s body continued through the weekend, but despite the aid depth-sounding equip- ment, the searchers found nothing.

The search was called off for the final time, Tuesday, January 19, but daily mon- itoring of the lake will con- tinue.

Students, family, faculty; and friends of the two arts undergraduates gathered at a packed memorial service at UVic last week. UVic pres ident, Howard Petch, als° asked students unable to at- tend the service to recogniz¢ a campus-wide two minute’ of silence.
