Tue Nationa, Dest 1x Gop AND SILVER ; IN Weieur snp Leneru.—lts weight in gold would be 6,282 tons; in silver, 120,000 tons; its transportation in gold would require twenty-six ships of 250 tons each ; 42,581 one-horse carts, cach carrying half a ton, and forming a procession twenty five miles in length, at 221,769 soldiers, each carrying 50 lbs. ; in sovereigns piled one upon the other, they would be 710 miles in height; laying them side by side, and touching each other, they would form a chain of gold 11,048 miles in length, or nearly twice the circumference of the moon; the same amount in one pound notes, sewed together, would carpet a turnpike road 40 feet broad and 1040 miles long, or from Land’s End to John O’Groat’s and half way back again; if sewed togetiier end to end, they would form a bandage reaching 4 times round the world, or {6 times round the moon; divide the debt equally among the inhabitants of the world, and each person, man, woman or child, of every colour, would receive as their share 16s.; it would require 476 ships of 250 tons each to transport it in silver from Mexico, (provided the mines in that country could furnish it,) and after reach- ing England 240,000 one-horse carts, carrying half a ton each, making a procession 676 miles long, or 5,000- 000 men carrying 50 }bs, each, to deposit it in the vaults prior to its use for the redemption of outstanding pledges. —The Trades Weekly Messenger.

E.oquence or Action.—-Demosthenes and Daniel Webster agree inattributing eloquence to action. Both proved the theory true by their action, A clergyman we have read of did the same thing more demon- strably. His wife had just been buried, and he was closing the service over her grave. Stretching forth his hand and pointing towards the grave, he said— ‘There the wicked cease from troubling,’ and then placing his hand on his breast he continued, ‘and the weary are at rest.

Dry as Dust.—Sandy Welsh tells a story of a man who was in the country on a visit where they had no liquor. He had got up two hours before breakfast and wanted his bitters.-- None were to be had, of course he felt bad.

‘ How far is it toa tavern?’ he asked. ‘ Four miles.’

So off this thirsty soul started—walked four miles in a pleasant frame of mind, arrived at the Tavern, and found it was a Temperance house.

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, accompa- nied by the Hon. T. H. Haviland, left town on Monday morning last, on a tour to St. Eleanor’s, Port Hill, Cas- cumpeque, Tignish, Princetown Royalty, and New London.

An American Fishiag schooner, named “ China,” laden with Mackerel, was wrecked on St. Peter’s Bay Bar, on this Island, a few days since.

Canada begs to intimate to his old customers and the Island in general, that he has decided upon remaining in Charlotte- town, and is prepared to carry on the general branches in the Blacksmithing business, at his old Establishment, near the Hon. George Coles’.

HER Majesty the Queen having been pleased to give

the Royal allowance to the act passed at last Session of the Legislature entitled dn ct to Incorporate a Mutual Fire Insurance Company—Notice is hereby given, that in pursuance of the Eleventh Section thereof, a members’ Book will be opened at noon on Monday the Second day of October next, at the Office of the Hon.
