LETTER FROM MR. F, MORROW.
Sir,—Aliow me to state through the colu:nns of THe Examiner, that the cause of the loss of a valuable colt, on which I had a surgical operation performed by Mr. F. McDonald, of Dundas, a veterinary surgeon, is not in any way to be attributed to the surgeon. I attach no blame what- ever to Mr. McDonald, and here state my reasons: some days after the operation was performed I noticed a swelling in the horse’s eyes, and at once sent for Mr. Mc- donald, who arrived ina few hours and pronounced the disease Tetanus, As he was a young man, and this was a colt I valued very highly, fearing he might be mistaken in the causes of the disease, I at once telegraphed for Mr. James McDonald, the veterinary surgeon of Summerside, who arrived bere the next evening. He pro- nounced the case incurable, but fully con- curred with Mr. F. McDonald’s treatment, and also said that the operation had been performed in a surgical manner.
While in conversation this afternoon with one of our best medical men, he fully satisfied me that no blame whatever was to be attached to the surgeon who perform- ed the operation, and that it coulc. be look- ed upon as nothing more than a mere acci- dent, as he, during his practice for the last twenty years, had met with several cases of Tetanus in the human body, and rarely knew one to recover. My reason for thus occupying your valuable space, is fearing that the loss of this case might in any way injure Mr. McDonald in his profession.

Proposition to Join a Gas and Steam En- gine Yogether.
Referring to the discussion of the gas engine question, a prominent engi- neer remarked in conversation that he failed to see why the gas engine and the steam engine should not be compound- ed, so to speak. He put the case some- thing in this manner: In the gas en- gine one of the problems is to keep the cylinder reasonably cool, and in the steam engine to keep the cylinder hot. Now, suppose we have a gas en- gine running and jacket its cylinder with water, which is then used for boiler feed water, thus saving the heat which is now thrown away. Then, take the exhaust from the gas engin: through the jacket of the steam cylin- der, and, if necessary, as it probably would be, add a heating chamber for the steam to pass through just befcr> reaching the cylinder, so that moie heating surface could be employed, Two such engines adapted to each oth- er would probably mean a relatively small gas engine and a steam engine large enough to carry all the load in case the gas engine refused to work for any reason, and, arranged in this way, each would supplement the other, so far as the proper distribution of heat is concerned. The proposition is a nove} one, and there is a chance to do some thinking over it. Possibiy some one mey be so situated as to make it easy tu try the plan and let us know the results.— American Machinist.
To Revive Shipbuilding at Quebec.
There is a scheme afloat to revive the shipbuilding industry at Quebec. Years ago Quetec did a larg? ship- building business, of course entirely in wood vessels. It is now proposed to enter there with iron shipbuilding. The steel ship plates to be used will be im-

A Bap Brivce-~--Yesterday while the wife of John Currie, of Emvvale, was driving in Green lay, Lot 34, she was seriously injured by an accident which happened at McPhee’s Bridge. The bridge is in a very bad state of repair. It epans the head—waters of the West River, and was damaged ly spring freshet«, but never repaired. A‘ present the top of the bridge is so unsafe that horses refuse to go over it. In Mrs. Currie’s case her horse backed the wagen over the side of the bridge, upsetting the trap into three feet of water. Mrs. Currie fell] under- neath, and how she escaped being killed when the horse fell over on her is a won- der. She was seriously injured, but man- aged to get the horse out of the stre..m, and led him home. The bridge is about six feet over the water, but has no guard at the side. Its disgraceful conditiou is responsible for the accident, which has excited much indignation.
