THE FAILURES OF THE GIFTED,

A poor, ragged drunkard at the bar of a police court, sad sight that it is, needs no explanation ; every spectator perceives that he is a man in ruins. He was born; he was an irnocent child, the pride and darl- ing of his parents; he became a man, with the hopes and the ambitions of a man. Yielding to insidious temptation, he lost power over himself, and sank rapidly to the wreck we see him now, the ecoff of the thoughtless. the shame of his family, an object of abhorrence to himeelf.

The tragedy is all too obvious, and, alas how common. There is another intem- perance which cannot be described in the
