The Vesper Prayer. One night when my soul was wearied, And my heart with care was sore, I walked with heedless tootsteps Past an old Cathedral door, My feet seemed guided onward By the power of an unseen hand, And I followed those that entered, Why, I did not understand.

But I crossed that old church portal In the silent vesper hour; And sad though I was and wearied, I could not but feel the power That over my erring spirit The wings of its mercy spread, As kneeling back in the shadow, I rev’rently bowed my head.

The lamps had not yet been lighted, And the grand old dusky pile Seemed meet for the Maker's worship, While up through the soumling aisle Passed those who quietly entered, To fall at their Master's feet, And offer their hearts’ pure incense, In that hour so calm and sweet.

At last, with reverent footsteps,

She knelt in a dusky corner, W ith rapt attention I gazed,

At the feet of the Infant Saviour Her little hands she raised.

And the childish lips were parted, In the prayer that tongue Divine First uttered, the sweet Our Father— It wakened this soul of mine. Sweet Christ-taught prayer of the Christian, I had heard thee oft before, And thy holy words had uttered, Carelessly passing them o’er.

But not till now had the spirit, That tills that glorious prayer. That a Man-God taught to mortals, Illumed me with light so rare ; And the grand, sweet faith of the Christian, That never was taught to me, By the words of a mighty sermon, That child gave me to see.

Aud then through the grand Cathedral Rose a solemn organ swe),

With the souad of a mighty anthem, As the music rose and fell ;

"Twas the solemn vesper service And I sank on bended knee,

While up through the grand old building,

, Flvated the words of peace.

And each swell of the mystic music That evening, touched my sou’,

And the Hand of the Gracious Healer Seemed to make my spirit whole,

Oft in that church ] had worshipped Midst earthly glitter and show,

And the tones of the mighty organ, And the singing sweet and low.

Had knelt with the crowd around me, And adored the Most Divine,

With bat an outward devotion, True worship was never mine.

Had listened to mighty. preachers Expounding the Lord's decrees,

But they failed totouch my spirit, My soul was not stirred by these,

But there in the vesper shadow, With worry of earth shut out, An infinite peace came o’er me, And banished the sin and doubt That had cast its shadows around me, And made my Faith a dream, A myth that my spirit slight d, A bubble on Life’s swiit stream.

And the words of a tender mercy, Spoken so long ago,

That ‘‘a little child shall lead thee,” Were passing to aad fro

Within my heart’s recesses. To-night I had proved them true,

That child’s sweet faith accomplished, What wisdem had failed to do.

And out of the old cathedral I went when the prayers were o'er, With a quiet, restful feeling In my heart once faint and sere. With footsteps both light and rcv'rent | walked down the dusky aisle, And the face of the pictured Ch:id-God Looked down with a holy smile.

And oft since then has my spirit Been tempted and sorely tried, Been tempted my soul’s great blessing, From scorn of the world to hide, But the faith an infant taught me In that holy vesper hour, Watched by the Infinite Giver. Is proof to the tempter’s power.

The Earl's Palace forms three sides of an oblong ‘square, and has, even in ite ruins, the air of an elegant ye. massive strueture, unit- ing, as was usual in the residence of feudal an the character of a palace and a castle. A great banqueting-hall, communicating with several large rounds, or projecting turret- rooms, and having at either end an immense chimney, testifies the ancient Northern hos- pitality of the Kars of Orkney, and commu- nicates, almost in the modern fashion, with a gallery, or withdrawing room, of correspond- ing dimensious, and having, like the hail, its projecting turrets. The lordly hall itself is ighted by a fine Gothic window of shafted stone at one end, and is entered by a spacious and elegant staircase,consisting of three flights of stone steps. The exterior ornaments and pioportions of the ancient building are also very handsome; but, being totally unprotected, this remnant of the pomp and grandeur of Earls who assumed the license as well as the dignity of petty sovereigns, is now#ast. crumb- ling to decay, and has sutfered considerably since the date of our story.

The stranger adjusted his own hat, noodded in return, tuok snuff, with the air of a petit maitre from a richly chased gold box, offered it to Cleveland as he passed, and being repulsed rather coldly, replaced the box in his pocket, folded his arms in his turn, and stood looking with fixed attention on his motions whose solitude he had interrupted. At length Cleveland stopped short, as if impatient of being longer the subject of his observation, and said abruptly, ‘* Why can. I not be left aione for half an hour, and what the devil is it that you want?”

‘** I am glad you spoke first,” answered the stranger, carelessly; ‘‘I was determined to know whether you were Clement Cleveland, or Cleveland's ghost, and they say ghosts never take the first word, so I now set it down for yourself in life and Jimb; and here is a fine old hurly-house you have found out fur an owl to hide himself in at midday, or a ghost to revisit the pale glimpses of the moon, as the divine Shakspeare says.”

** Well, well,” answered Cleveland, abruptly ‘* your jest is made, and now let us have your earvest.” :

‘‘In earnest, then, Captain Cleveland,’ replied his companion, ‘‘ 1 think you know me for your friend.”

‘*T am content to suppose so,” said Cleve land.

‘* It is more than supposition,” replied the voung man; * I have proved it—proved it both here and elsewhere, ’

‘* Well, well,” answered Clicveland, ‘I admit you have been always a friendly fellow —and what then?”

‘* Well, well, —and what then?” replied the other ; ‘‘ this is but a brief way of thank- ing folks, Look you, Captain, here is Benson Bealowe, Dick Fletcher, anda few others of us Who wish you well, have kept your old comrade Captain Goffe in these seas upon the lonk-out for you, when he and Hawkins, and the greater part of the ship's company, would fain have been down on the Spanish Main, and at the old trade.”

** And I wish to God that you bad ail gone about your business,” said Cleveland, ‘* and left me to my fate.”

** Which would have been to be informed against and hanged, Captain, the first time that any of these Dutch or English rascals, whom you have lightened of tueir cargoes, came to set ‘heir eyes upou you; and no place more likely to r-eet with seafaring men, than in these Islands.
