HOW THE CHINESE LEARNED A LESIJON—A PLAIN CONVERT- ED INTO A COAL-HEAP.
In the heart of Pekin, the capital of Chins, stands a hili, the building on whoee crown is the highest point within.
It ie evident that the hill is not one of the original marks of the landscape, for the plain in which Pekin lies was at one time the bottom ofa branch of the sea, which, receding, has now left it 150 miles from the coast. and the city lies in one of the levelest spots of the sandy plain. The history of the strange hill’s formation is as follows ;
Iu the early days of the norther p cap ital the city was beseiged for a long time by a tribe of Moogols who bad come down through tbe mountains on one of their periodical raids. They ranged through the plan, murdering and plundering, and finally brought up before the gates of the citv.
But the massive walls were ample pro- tection against the plurderers, who were armed with no other weapons than their spears and arrows.
The city -vas well supplied with food to withstand a long siege, so with the great city gates closed and barred, the Emperor and people watch complacency the gather- ing hordes wi:hoat, knowing that they could stili be living well from their im- meuse siores long after the besiegers kad completely exhuu-ted the resources of the barren plain around.
The siege had been onfor some time when the people within discovered that while they bad plenty of food and water their supply of fuel was alinost exhausted. This was a very serious matter for them, for they had long known tbat without fue! to boil their water before using, epidemics and fevers were sure to riot among them.
Their buiidiogs were almost entirely of brick and stoue, so that there was little to be cleaned from that source. They care- fully husbanded their diminisaiog stock of fuel but it fivally disappeared, and in spite of every precaution fever and cholera broke out in the city and carried off thousands. But the diseases finally spread to the invaders, who, despairing of takirg thecity, gathered what blunder they could from the villages of the plain and retired through the mountain passes to tkeir northern Lome.
TAUGHT A LESSON.
The hardships whicn they had suffered through the siege had taught the people a lesson, and the Emperor did not intend that his capital should be «aughtin euch a plight again, 80 no sooner had the invac- ers disappeared than he began bringing into the city immeose supplies of coal. A YOUNG HEROINE.
A Little Girl Allows Her Skin to be Taken to Save Her Burned Brother's Life.
The following story of heroism comes from Toronto :—Charlie, the eight-year- oid son of Mr. Rough Smith, of the Custom His left wide, back and arm were so badly burned thatthe physicians in attendance almost gave up hope for bis life. A con- sulitation was held, at which it was con- cluded that the only way to heal the burns and save the use of the muscles to the boy was to graft skin uponthem. The doctors looked in vain for someone that would permit be ekin to be cut from bis body to graf: ou to Charlie.
At last Charlie’s little sister, Eva, who ix but twelve yearsold, and who heard her parents talking the matter over, went io the family doctor, and said ;—
