Certainly the thought of the man who fought and trisked his life on the battlefields returning home to be taxed to provide extra care and privileges for the man who refused to fight or risk his life on the battlefields, is hardly a pleasant one.

Importance Of Antwerp

f0 the mcn whose task it is to supply the Allied armies on the western front, Antwerp is a prize beyond price. It is one of Europe's great ports, capable of handling ocean liners up to 30,000 gross tons. Its facilities include r2 drvdocks and a harbor of 24 docks with 25 miles of frontage. There are also 3 1-2 miles oi (plays along the river front where vessels up to 27,000 tons can be bcrthed. Along the quavs atid at the docks are hundreds of mam- moth cranes which can speed the unloading of supply vcsscls by lifting a hundred tons at a. crack.

Behind the docks, and of equal importance, are more than 50o tuiles of double-tracked rail- ways. 'I‘l1ere,arc tremendous warehouses in which goods can be sorted out and stored. The combination of adequate warehousing and rail yards will mahc it possible to turn the trickle of supplies which have been coming in over the beaches for our troops into a veritable flood. But before this can take place, the Schelde channel must be cleared of mines, and of a thicl; la_\'(-t" of silt that has accumulated in the river in the last four ycars.

In normal timcs the 55-mile channel re- quires constant drctlging to keep it open to the required drpth of 31) feet. Because of the Brit- ish blockade, tltc Licrntztns could make little use oi Antwerp. Thcy wasted little time or manpower on dredging the channel. Reports from Belgium scent to agree that dredges will have to gouge about I5 feet of silt frntn the river before the port is restored to full useful- ncss.

This week's meeting of the legislators is entirely needless, unless the Prime Minister dc- cides he wants to talk to them in a secret sitting. Sin-I have followed with great interest the discussion of education carried on last. week in your columns by Mrs. Frank and

r. Maclure. Mrs. Frank is per- haps not exaggerating when she speaks of "the acute need for drastic changes in the education- al system o! Prince Edward Isl- and." The whole field of educa- tion ls stirring, and changes in the near future are both desirable and highly likely; the public is awakening to the fact that educa- tion is of vital importance. and that. certain changes are overdue. Bu). both as a citizens and as a professional educator I am most

anxious that. those changes shall be improvements, and that we do not make the tragic mistake of adopting educational philosophies and methods that have already been tried and found wanting. As I see it, the discussion has dealt. up to date with three sub- jects. First. there is the attack on the classics. an attack familiar whcreevei- Philistlnes congregate, with the specific demand that Latin be removed from the prim- ary school curriculum to make way for physics and chemistry. Second. there is the extension of this attack. by implication at least. to the whole field of liberal edu- cation, and the corresponding sup- port of a predominantly techni- cal trainlng and the demand fol‘ vocational schools. Third, in the effort to supply a basis for this attitude, there is the appeal to authority, an appeal to which the "scientific" mind is supposed to allow no validity.

All three points are important. and I should like to deal with all of them; but since both space and time are limiting factors. I shall coitsldet" today only the third. the appeal to atttliority. If Mrs. Frank wishes to continue the dlsctissinn, I shall be happy to deal with the other two olnts, the case for the classics an the case for a liberal education. at a later date.

And how does Mrs. Frank, the proponent. of science. answer this argument? She appeals to auth- ority. And what authority! She parades before us ‘Teachers’ Col- lege of Columbia University, and the names of James, Dewey. Thorndike. and Klljiutrick. Among those interested in education the suspicion. now become a demons- trated certainty, has long been growing that no institution has clone more than Columbia Teach- ers’ College and no individual has done more than John Dewey to vitlate education in North Am- erica and to destroy whatever ves- tlge of civilization were to be found on this continent. A roll-call of the masters may pass as rational argument in the realms of “pro- gressive" education. but it will hardly convince those who still believe that man is a rational animal.
