Rapsom, who stool charged with arson. In suis case, he said Rapsom makes a confessio: of the crime to two credible witnesses. He tells them of incidents that occured about the time he committed the crime—horses’ tails veing shaved, dogs shot, etc.. ete. When he is called to give evidence before the Court he says he was telling lies and making fan. But, wheter he was funning or in earnest, his statements are mostly corroborated by facts ; and, in the face of this, it is impossible to do otherwise than send him before the Grand Jury on the serious charge which he is at present accused of. He said he would re- mand George Dockendorff on the charge o1 being an accomplice im the forgery case. Al- though the evidence at present against him 1s very slight, there is enough, he thought, to deta'n him on that charge. ‘The evidence, so far, is his confession of selling the checks-— which represented over two hundred dol- lars —- bought by Horriel for twenty dollars. He deuies that he had any

iterest in the transaction, but then the evidence of George Carter shows that he expected Horriel to get money

on the checks while he was in town. He would also send him up for trial for receiving stolen goods—the beehive—and for shaving the horses tails. The evidence was sufficient to send Charles Horriel before the Grand Jury for forgery ; also, for stealing Mr. McKinley’s hay. He would also send Donald MeKinnen up on a simlar charge, as he confessed assisting Horriel on the theft of the hay. Benjamia Dockendorfé will also go before the Jury on four separate charges of larceny, viz: Stealing Mr. Stockman’s harness; goods from the ‘Seven Mile House”; participating in the stolen property—dealing out the honey from the bee-hive—and also stealing the bucket from John Mall.t:'s. James Crosby will go up for the forgery, the larceny of harness from Mr. Stockwan, and also for the larceny of gr_ceries from the ‘‘Seven Mile Honse.” Char- les Dockendorff will be remanded on his own confession of shaving — the horses tails and for _ stealing the bechive. George White will be held for the last named offence. As yet there is no evidence against William Dockendorff, al- though it seems strange that he was at the North River on the night of the second fire. | He wonid not detain him.

The Magistrate then said that the charge of arson the evidence pointed to several parties, mut it was not real nor tangible. The charge was 4 very serious one, and as there was no direct evidence it would be useless to detain the parties charged. Ulowever, if anything further bearing on the matter comes to light the Grand Jury can take action as they please. Che shooting and burning of the dogs were brutal and barbarous acts, and when com- mitted at achurch where divine service was hell—as the latter was—it reflected little credit on the community who let the per- petrators of the deed go unpunished. it is not at all creditable to the people of North River that twelve grevious offences shoald be committed within three or four ye-rs in that locality without the inhabitants inaking the slightest effort to have the offend- evs brought to justice. On the contrary some of them appear to aid the culprits in their ding. as their condnet on the witness stand plainly shows. They see dogs barned in their midst, turged cheques passing from one hand to the other ; horses’ tails shaved ; and they look on quietly without making the slightest eTort to have the criminsis brouzht to the bar of justice. Facts like these are by no mea’s ereditnble to the people who live in that vicinity. We learn that the prisoners, with the ex-,; ception of George Dockendolff, have been! acmitted to bail.

The Viceroy of India reports that Major Cavignai received a friendly letter from Syad Mahomad, Chief of Kainar Valley, announcing his intention of coming en. The Vimes, in its article on the military situation, says, this may be the forerunner of the intelligence already hinted at, that the districts of Chitnal Swat and Kunar will be incorporated into the Indian Empire. By the occupation of this tract of country, an easy and direct road will be opened ap from Punjauk to Zarkand and Kuashbar, presenting far fewer difficulties than that now followed by the Central Asian trading association, which traverses the high mountain ranges of Cashmere and Ladak.
