A Remarkable Man.

FPorr Avevustus folk are tongh. They are Irish and they are Glasgow-l[rish—ash and hickory. ‘They are tovgh and they are smart. One of them, a man of seventy- three is ready to bet you anything that he can teavel fifteen miles on foot in two hours -——in two consecutive hours. But there is another men about here—at Monaghan— who for his age is smarter still, and who certainly is tough, He is an Irishman, and a Monaghan, and a great, great grand- father, anda Fitzsimmons. ‘*Harry Fitz- simmons” they catied him; “Old Harry” it is now. He isa hundred and seven they say. He is, 1 believe, a hundred and five, at least. He came from Monaghan to Monaghan. He came forty-five years ago. He is alive and he is well. He is not blind. Heis not lame. He is not sick. He is not sore. He is not imbecile. He is not stupid. He is dull of hearing, he has corns on his toes, thatisall. He is alive and well and in working cendition. Last sum- mer he cut two tons of hay with the grass- hook—hay grown and growing near the fences and in fence corners, and on a piece

ito eay that Mr. F., about a dozen years ago, |laid away his spectacles, their occupation \gone—that till a few months ago he could ‘read fine print without artificial aid—and that now, however, the print is required te ibe larger. And now fer the last item. | Three or four years ago Mr, Fi'zsimmons, by kindly invitation of a neighbor, took his ‘seat upon the mowing machine in the hay field, And went around the field a few times cutting away as he went. He needed no |help in getting up, keeping on, or getting down, and he got none. True, he did not drive the teain but he attended to the machinery, and but for never having under- taken the like before, might have done the driving too. He is beliesed to have been strong enough and smart enough at the time to have done it all.

Boston Harbor.

DEATH TRAP AT THE ENTRANCE.

The Boston Post of Saturday last con- tains eight columns giving the result of ex- plorations made by its reporters, showing that Boston Harbor and its approaches contain ledges, rocks and shoals, dangerous

of marsh, working upon his knees. Last summer he hoed and moulded (earthed up) an acre of Early Rose potatoes, and com- pleted the moulding of three acres more that had been done with the plow so far as team and plow could be made to do the work. He, last season, removed all of a heap of stones from about a pine stump and then dng at and dug out the stump. One day last summer when at work on the marsh he saw that a newly-obtained cow had broken her tether and wes-off. ‘The old man started in pursnit. He followed the cow into a grain field. He got hold of the rope she was dragging. He brought that cow out of that field through the tangled oats, and he tied her to the fence ! One day last fall he got on top of a stack consisting of two hundred and fifty stooks, and he forked every sheaf of it to within reach of the person who cut the bands and did it fast enough to keep the other laborers and the threshing mill at work. His wife and the then surviving members of his family accompanied him to this colony— one excepted, a son sailed for Quebec and it is not known what became of him. Mr. F, is a great, great, grandfather; he may be a great, great, great grandfather—there has been time enough for the great, great, ‘eventuality—hypotheticality call it. The old man is small. He was never large— ifive feet six—a hundred and fifty pounds weight, at his best, never more. He is smallframed. There is no show of coarse- hess about him in feature, voice, or manuer. | His brow speaks of high moral qualities, and of fairly good intellectual endowments. |He was not much of a talker. He wasa fine singer. He speaks now only as spoken to, and as other occasions require. Deaf _people do not talk much. He is bald- | headed—bald-crowned I meav. His hair jis not white. That dark brown was the color is plainly to be seen. He is wonder- fully well preserved. He has been what is called good looking. He is not ill-looking. His complexion is fair. He is not very thin-faced. His face is not seamed and wrinkled all over. It has not a dried |up, wasted, bloodless appearance. He hasa ‘healthy look. The writer visited Mr. F., | Sunday, the 4th of May. He found him ‘in the kitchen by the stove. He was sit- \tingon a plain, simple pine bench without 'acushion. The bench sicod against the wall, beside the entrance to the old man’s bed-room. At the writer’s request, a neigh- bor present spoke to Mr. Fitzsimmons. “Oh,” he exclaimed, ‘‘I am so deaf I can’t ‘hear you.” He said it right cheerfully and ‘with a clear, strong musical voice—not too |loudy, but in good conversational tone. Told of this being the month of May. ‘‘It | will be late planting,” he promptly remark ‘ed. There was no cheer, there was no dissatisfaction in the utterance. The writer saw the old man get up and go into his room, shutting the door after him, and he saw him some time after come out and re sume his seat upon the bench. His knee seemed to be weak. The marvel is that he can stand without crutches—that anybody could habitually be on his knees upon the ‘grass, hours at a time in this latitude and lin this climate, and yet be able to stand. A cup of tea anda plate containing bread and butter were placed on a chair beside him. The writer watched rarrowly as he | liftedthe cup with one hand and nearly filled | the saucer therefrom, and again, as with the one hand he raised the saucer te his lips and drank, he did not spill a drop! His hand did net shake! A lad of fifteen could not have done the thing better. The old man seemed to partake of the repast with appe- tite and a relish ; he gives little or po trouble. Give him his three meals by the stove, and put a hot brick, or two of them, in his bed, and you may go. He gives ne trouble and he has given no trouble. He gets up when he likes, some mornings, even now, before breakfast; gets his breakfast and, in summer, does what his hands find to do unasked and uninterfered with. He 'works by himself, and when he is hungry ‘he comes home. Of course he is houesd iis winter, and in cold, chilly and otherwise unpleasant weather. In a word, his daugh- |ter, and her son, and her son’s wife and children, who, with himself, make a happy) family. All seem to know how best to treat him, and he them, that peace and harmony may prevail in the household, and how best the hero of a century of toi} may ‘*husband out life’s taper to its close.” May, 1884.

S.—The writer finds that he has omitted mention of two or three things of interest contained in his notes, First, that Mr. F. is of a long-lived family, as seems to be teue generally of all very old people His father lived to be of about his present age, and a brother of his died at, or near, Fort Augustus a few years ago, ageda hundred, nearly. Aguin, I must not omit

to navigation, which have not been shown in charts hitherto, The matter is one of much interest, and with this before us we can bear with equanimity the harsh criti- cisms and slanderous remarks of Boston editors about the approaches to our own peerless harbor. The Yost thus sums up we eee of the explorations made by its stafl:—

‘Summing up the results obtained by the Post's representatives it, in general terms, amounts “to this: According to the testimony of Minot’s ledge lighthouse, the wreck comuiissioner of that district, supple- mented by the strongest endorsements of various ship masters of high standing in maritime circles, a most dangerous ledge has been located and brought to the attention of mavigators and will, no doubt, receive the attention of the govern- ment ofticers and properly buoyed. One reason more than others that made this ledge particularly dangerous to navigation was the fact that it is situated directly in the main ship channel, only about two or two and one-half miles from Minot’s ledge lighthouse, that beacon which is so closely watched by mariners ap- prvaching this coast Until, now, this beacon was supposed to stand on the out- site ledge of Scituate Harbor, and the Gov- ernment charts guaranteed no danger- ous places outside. Another rock of a most dangerous character has been lo- cated nearer tine coast, dangerous only per- haps to smaller vessels. But this rock, even does not appear on the charts. Infor- mation has also been given in reference to another shoal, which is also iu a dangerous loeality, in which, from the testimony of those who have been-upon it, the water is far too shoal for safety. From the infor- mation furnished it will not be a difficult task for the Government cfticials to investi- gate, and if found necessary locate the proper warning buoys. Itis possible that the bearings given by the two ledges locat- ed may not be absolutely correct in every particular. They were teken from an open boat, in rough water, by men not tho- ronghiy conversant with such matters, but they were verified by several trials on dif- ferent days, and it is thought they are very nearly, if not absolutely, correct.

Medical men will be relieved by the re- sult which has been reached in a singalar case before the English courts. The plain- tiff was the father of a child who suffered from ‘*‘ croup.’’ It being necessary to in- sert a tube in the child’s throat to relieve itfrom threatened suffocation, the opera- tion was skilfully performed. After the insertion of the tube the physicians re- quested the father to free it from the accu- mulated matter with his lips, which he instantly did, the doctors neglecting to tell him that he incurred any risk. The child died, and its disease proved to have been diphtheria, by which the father, in turn, was soon attacked. He sted the doctors for damages. The case was tried twice and was tuch discussed in the English press. Upon the first tral the jury disagreed. But Lord Coleridge told the second jury that the doctors were right in telling the father to free the tube, and a verdict for the defendants was found. The principle, we suppose, is that it is no part of a doc- tor’s duty to incur danger in the discharge of bis profession, when the act to be per- formed requires no particular skill and can be devolved upon another standing in re- lations of blood and affection to the patient. 202

Patrick Delaney’s testimony in the case of the Sligo conspirators at Tubbercurry, Ireland, gives the utmost satisfaciion to the detective. They have al! along claimed that the Sligo conspirators were a band of ‘professional murderers.” They now de- clare that Delaney’s testimony will prove that the officers in arresting these villains have “unearthed a nest of vipers engaged in plots of wholesale slaughter.’ It is be- lieved throughout Sligo that Fitzgerald is really a Fenian of the old school, which ad- vocated armed rebellion against England, and did not favor assassinaticn. He was a sturdy opponent of the plans of Brennan, Egan, and Sheridan. It is said he opposed the two first named because they did not favor open tesistance, but advocated agita- tion and moral force, and that he objected to Sheridan’s policy of murder. Some of Fitzgerald's friends go so far now as to say that it was Sheridan who ordered the “ re- moval’ of those landlords who were active in advocating the foreshadowed claims in the Irish land act which provided for state aided purchase of lands.
