W. C. Bartlett, the Chief of the Hy-| drographic office at Washington, has | made an application to the Secretary of) the Navy for permission to send a war| vessel to search for dangerous rocks, | reported on the eastern edge of New-| foundland, and heretofore unknown to} navigators, but which are supposed to have been the cause of the loss of mao} transatlantic steamers, together with hundreds of lives and millions of dollars worth of cargoes. The rocks are term ed pinnacle rocks, and are from three to tive feet high at low water and are exceedingly difficult to tind.

The most important information that has been received concerning them came from Capt. R. A. Williams,master of the ship “Beethoven” of Windsor, N. S., and which arrived at New York, several weeks ago from Antwerp. He reports thaton Jaly 25, between lati- tude 43.45 and 43.38, and longitude 52 and 52,28, he sighted three dangerous rocks, and immediately called all the officers and crew of the ship to get into the rigging and assist in logatiug them. They could be distinctly seen from the deck of the ship, but observations were taken aloft in order that their size could be better measured. The sea was seen breaking over them with terrific fury, accompanied with hugh breakers. Sea birds were also seen hovering about in numbers in search of fish common to shoal water. These obstacles so dan- gerous to navigation, lie in a direction ranniog from north-north-east to south-south-west, the two southermost rocks lying close together. After spend- ing some time at work, a heavy sea coming up, with the appearance of a gale, the ship’s course was changed to- ward her destination.

Lieutenants Wyckoff and Barrofl, of the Philadelphia Branch Hydrographic Office, who bave been in charge of United States war vessels as navigators, believe in the existanee of these rocks, and think they have been the cause of the loss of many ‘vessels which have never been heard from after leaving port. Capt. McDonald, of the British ship Winnifried, says that he has scen seaweed floating in that vicinity, having frequently caught in his log. His views are endorsed by many other competent and trustworthy navigators.

The Helping Hand.

I shall never forget the feeling I had once when climbing one of the pyra- mids of Egypt. When balf-way up, my strength failing, I feared I should never be able to reach the summit or get back again. Iwill remember the help given by Arab hands, drawing me on fariher; and the step I could not quite makegnyself, because too great tor my wearied frame;the little help given me—sometimes more and some- times less—enabled me to go up, step by step, step by step, until at last I reached the top, and breathed the pure air, and had a grand lookout from the lofty height. And so, in life’s journey we are climbing. We are feeble. Every one of us, now and then, needs a little help ; and,if we have risen a step higher than some other, let us reach down for our brother’s hand, and help him to stand beside us. And thus, joined hand in hand, we shall go on conquering,step by step, until the glorious eminence shall be gained. An! how many need help in this world—poor afflicted ones ; poor sorrowing ones; poor tempted Ones, who have been overcome, who have been struggling, not quite able to get up the step; trying, falling ; trying, falling ; trying, desponding; hoping, almost despairing! Oh, give such a one help, alittle kindly aid, and the step may be taken, and another step may be taken ; and, instead of dying at the base, he may, 5y a brother’s help, be raised to safety, and finally to glory. — Bishop Simpson.

There is little doubt that the thiog which most needs to be preached to this generation by ministers ot the gos- pel, by clerical and lay instructors of the youth, by all who have public in- fluence or private authority is—a sense of honor. It must be shown and insist- ed upon that every position in life where one person ix employed by another 10 do a certain work, imposes an obliga- tion to fulfilthe duties of the place with an honorable and disinterested re- gard for the interests of the employer. lt must be shown that this view of em- ployment applies to the cook,the errand boy, the cashier, the legislator, the Governor, This is atrite and apparent- ly simple and perhaps somewhat stupid view of the opportunities of a “smart,” ambitious young man of our day, but unless this commonplace view of re- sponsibility is laid hold of by increas. ing numbers in the future of our country, we will not say that our society will go to pieces, but will say that our calamities will increase, and that we wiil get into troubles, and not soon out of them, compared with which the dangers and distresses of the past will seem almost insignificant.
