A soy named William Fitzgibbon, who had recently being doing some extensive robberies in St. John, N. B., and who had extended his tield of work to Moncton, where he was caught, has been sentenced to six years im- prisonment in the penitentiary. Fitzgibbon is fourteen years old.

THe barque ‘‘Claribel,” McRae, master, arrived at Liverpool on the 29th inst., making the passage from Baie Verte in twenty days. This vessel sailed from Liverpool on the $th of July for Baie Verte, where she loaded a cargo of deals for Liverpool, making the round voyage in the unprecedented short time of fifty-one days, including eleven days taken in loading at Baie Verte. The ‘‘Claribel” will take in freight at Liverpool for this port, following the good barque *‘William Owen.”

Mucu Neepep.~We more than once drew attention to the danger of having the railroad wharf without being lighted on dark nights. The community has tothank Mr. Coleman for having attended to this matter; six lamps have been placed on the wharf where most needed, aad a large one (a locomotive headlight) near the station. These, when lighted, will remove all danger. We also expect that our city fathers will take the hint and have a few dozen lamps placed along the principal streets. The gangway from the station to Water street is also boing attended to as we write. Both these improvements are calculated to give much satisfaction. — Pioneer.

Tut ‘Ladies Hospital Aid Society” was organized on Saturday afternoon, in St. Paul's Schoolroom, umder most encouraging and gratifying circumstances. The officers elected are: —

Sr. James’ Cuurcn Saspatx Proxic.—This picnic, held yesterday at Rocky Point, proved a successful and pleasant affair. The day opened unfavorably, nevertheless a fair num- ber of the teachers and scholars went over by the forenoon boat. The weather became more favorable as the day advanced, and in the afternoon a large number joined the friends who had preceded them. The efforts of those who had charge of the arrangements were spirited and harmonious, the condact of the young people admirable, and every one present appeared to heartily enjoy the pro- ceedings, The pecuniary proceeds, after meeting necessary expenses, will leave a re- spectable balance for the general purposes of the school. The teachers are greatly satisfied with the result, and desire to express their thanks to those who aided them in making their entertainment so pleasant and suc- coustul.

The meal sold at from $3.25 to $3.50 per 100 lbs. Mr. J. B. Stewart, of Lot 48, sold a quantity of flour ground from this seasons growth of wheat. It sold at $3 per 100 lbs.

DrowNED.—Yesterday morning Mr George Bell and son, and a man named Doucett, were working on board the wrecked ship ‘‘Marco Polo” at Cavendish Cape. ‘The storm became so strong that they thought the hull would be broken to pieces by it. ‘They therefor decided to come ashore. They launched a boat but it upset before they came any distance. Mr. Bell and his son clung to the boat, but Doucett was washed off and drowned. The deceased was a native of Rustico, He leaves a wife and four children,

Axzovut two weeks ago conductor Maurice Daley was suspended by superintendent Price, but at the time no mention was made in this paper. Since then Daley has gone to the United States and, it is said, that he is not likely to return—at least to accept a position on the I. ©. R. The charge against Daley, it appears, was for leaving his train which was a working one, on the main line to go with a lady fora row on Jacquet River. When it came to the ears of the superintendent, he suspend- ed Daley and informed him that he could return to work within a certain time, as brakesman, but could not hope to get his train again. —Moncton Transcript.

Harry Packard,one of Barnum’s employes who assists in taking care of the elephants, came to his death in. a peculiar manner at Cincinnati, Ohio. -He was preparing the elephunts for the first parade through the streets on the 27th, and while standing near one of the wagons the elephant Queen swayed her ponderous body and squeezed Packard so tightly ayainst the wagon that he could hardly call for help. Before assistance could come to take the elephant away Packard was senseless. He revived soon afterwards, and though in great pain, was thought not to be seriously injured. The patrol wagon was called and he was taken to the Cincinnati Hospital. There it waa ascertained that three ribs were brok- en, and that he had received very serious internal injuries, He died in a few hours. His home is in Hartford, Conn. He was 41
years of age.
