Just as They Were.

It is related of Fanny Kemble that she carried the tregic air of the stage into everyday affairs. While in Boston she stopped at the Trement House and was accustomed to dine in ber rooms at 5 o'clock. On one occasion the waiter brought her dinner ten minutes too soon, and she made him take it away until the bour had struck. On another occasion she gave the scrvant some clothes for the laundry.

‘‘When can these be returned to me, washed and ironed?’’ she inquired.

“The day after tomorrow, madam, at noontime.’’

‘**Be it so,’ was the dramc'ic reply, “at 12 on Wednesday.’’

But on the hour appointed the clothes Pad not been returned, and at ten min- utes past noon @ servant stood before her in reeponse to the short summons cf the bell.

**My clothes that were to be returned at 12 teday—bring them”’

‘*But, madam, we have not been able to get them ready owing to a difficulty inthe laundry. You shall have them tomorrow.”’

‘Bring them now—they were prom- ised today. ’’

“I know it, madam, but they are not ready.’’

“It matters not to me. Bring them just as they are.’’

WHAT SHE WANTED.

The Huckster Was Called Up Four Flights to Hear Something.

A huckster was going along an east side street early one morning making the welkin ring with his singsong of ‘* Po-ta-t-o-0-0-es, toma-t-o-o-es! Nice sweet cooking appools!’’ As he drove slowly along he lifted his eyes to the windows on either side of the street.

“Suddenly there appeared a woman’s head at a window in one of the top flats. The huckster pulled in bis horse and raised his ear to listen to the commands he expected would be coming, but the woman had not the lung power to make her voice carry so far, and the huckster called out, ‘‘How’s that?’’

Again the woman called, and her voice came down faintly. The huckster didn’t know whether she wanted pota- toes, cantaloupes, tomatoes or corn. So

Gathering a handful of samples of various vegetables from his stock, he mounted four flights of back stairs and arrived at the top panting. The woman stood there awaiting his coming.

‘‘Couldn’t bear what you said, lady,’’ raid the huckster. ‘‘So I brought up some of each kind an’ you Can pick what you want an I’ll go down an get ’em.’’

‘‘Want?’’ said the woman, who was in a towering rage. ‘‘Want? I don’t waut none of your old vegetables. What I want is for you to stop hollerin in

The huckster stood with set eyes and drooping jaw, the perspiration dropping off bis chin, while this harangue was going on. When she had finished, he came out of his trance and said:

‘Is that what you called me all the way up here for? Send fer yer p’lice, lady! I'm goin to yell to beat the band.’’ And he went down the stairs and out of the alley and up the street in front of the house with four extra links let out of his throat, and if any person slept on that street it was under the inflwence of opiates.—-Kanaas City Stan

YOUNG MEN’S CHANCES. Best Avenues to Success Are Found Out- side Our Largest Cities.

‘* Business conditions of the great cit- fes are not favorable to young men,”’ writes Edward W. Bok in The Ladies’ Home Journal, advising young men about to begin their careers against go- ing to the big cities. ‘‘It is said,’* he continues, ‘‘thet competition develops men. It does unquestionably. But to cope with present competition as it ex- ists in the centers calls for a vast emount of experience. That experience @ map must have back of him before he can enter the competing arena. ‘But how can I better acquire that experience than where there is constant need of it?’ How better, my young friend? By serv- ing a long apprenticeship im some city smaller than the greatest. The large cities are today poor places in which to learn the rudiments of business com- petition, for while the young man is learning the experienced man swallows him up. ‘But that is experience,’ per- sists the young man. It is, but a more severe kind than there is need of—a kind which, once indulged in, does not leave a pleasant remembrance. Compe- tition in a smaller city may be just as

important to the young man starting out, the risks are not so great, the ex- perience is not apt to be so costly should he fail to succeed. It is a true saying that a man before he succeeds in business must expect te measure his height on the ground a time or twa. But it is not necessary that in his first knockdown be should be knocked out.

‘*But there is another and more im- portant fact which the young man away from the lafge cities does not realize. It is that the number of possi- ble positions in the large cities is not increasing, despite the reiterated aster- tions constantly made to the contrary. The very opposite is the truth. Various canées explain this—higher taxes, high- er prices of lots, or lack of building room, labor strikes and lower cost of production. The mannfactuging inter- ests of this country are constantly tend- ing toward the smaller cities and away from the centers. And this means fewer positions, since only in rare instances does the executive branch of a business call for a larger number of employees than does the manufacturing side. Strange as the change of current may geem, i¢ is nevertheless a fact that the young man who today leaves a good sized city of actual manufacturing ad- vantages turns his back on what in a few years will be one of the industrial beehives of America.’’

IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM.

The Duration of Life Varies Accerding to Circumstances.

Among the long lived in the animal kingdom we may mention birds, fish and reptiles, although even in the lower animals the duration of life varies im- mensely, according to the species. Of fish, the carp are especially long lived.

Among birds, some of the parrot spe- cies are supposed to live over 100 years. The swan, the raven, the eagle, are also credited with great length of life.

In the mammalia, the elephant at- tains the greatest age. It grows for 25 to 30 years and is said to live from 100 to 150 years and even longer. We have no accurate means of ascertaining the whale’s age. A lion is said to have lived 70 year’ in the Tower, but there is no ev- idence t@at he attains anything like that age in the nacural state. Forty years is recorded by uaturalists as the extreme age. The camel may attain the age of 50. It eats little and drinks less. The horse ig comparatively a short lived ani- mal, but it is a well known fact that when he does little work and passes the greater part of his days in pasture he may attain to about 40 years of life, but when a horse is hard worked and fed, moreover, upon beans, oats and other ossifying foods his days are much shorter.

In the vegetable kingdom the yew at- tains great age. Those at Fountains ab- bey are about 1,290 years old. Two orange trees at Rome, planted respec- tively by St. Dominic and Thomas Aquinas, are said to be from 500 to 600 years old, and there are records of trop- ical] trees that, counting by their rings, are supposed to have attained the age of 800 to 1,000 years. —Nineteenth Cen- tury.
