Tue life saving stations at Big Sandy Creek, Mexico Bay, Oswego, Charlotte, Bufialo, Erie, Fairport, Cleveland and Marblehead went inte commission on Sat- urday. The service saved 600 lives last season.

Hantan’s new hotel, now building on the Island, Toronto, was blewn down on Satur- day afternoon, and fourteen :en who were on the building were buried in the ruins. Some of them had their shoulder dislecated, legs hurt, faces cut, and otherwise injured.

LeaDVILLE, CoLorapvo.—Says the Truro Sun: ‘*One young man frem Pictou, writes home from Leadvillo, Colorado, that he never saw so many idle people in his life as in that place. Other reports are equally discouraging.”

MovEMENTS OF CaTTLE For Export.— Yesterday 4 car loads of cattle, the prop- erty of Ald. McShane, of Montreal, came down by the Intercolonial, have left Chauderie Junction on Wednesday at noon and were housed in the Government freight house. A lot of 135 head also left this station for Halifax, and another lot of 103 head, the balance of a shipment that has been at this Station for some time, were to have started for Halifax this morning.— Moneton Times.

Tue Late Duke or Porttanp anv NeEwspaPEerRs,— A newspaper bill ef £1,300 a year is a privilege enjoyed by few. Yet this amount is said to have been expended on newspapers alone for many years by the late Duke of Portland. He subscribed to an immense number of daily and week'y journals, having four complete sets sup- plied of each—one for each of his Scotch houses, one for Welbeck, and one for Har- court Honse. Some of them were bound up into volumes every six months. Prin- cely in all his deings, the late Duke prob- ably excelled royalty itself in his press ex- penditure.

ORATORY IN THE House or Commons. — The Ottawa correspondent of the Montreal ‘* Star ”’ sends the fellowing te that paper : Oratory, as an art, is ata verylow ebb in our House of Commons ; indeed, I do not know of mere than three in parliament who could lay claim to that character with jus- tice. Nor do they seem to make an effort to improve themselves ; on the contrary, they have become confirmed in their ungraceful habits of utterance and gesture. Alto gether, there is a greater number of stut- tering, stammering, jirking, aw-awing, speakers in the Heuse this parliament than ever before in recollection. As bad habits are catching, the example is being followed and bids fair to be perpetuated unless the rising generation follow purer morals and cultivate better taste.

Dave Ritcuis, an Indian, well known in the Couuty of Bruce, Ontarie, is at present in the Walkerton jail for treaten- ing to shoot a man. This has encouraged a friend of his to give the following reve- lations :—In the year 1876 a quantity of lumber came ashore on the peninsula ef Bruce, and Ritchie took possession of it, some of which was, however, stolen during his absence. [n the same place. shortly afterwards, being in company with this friend, three Indians were seen approach- ing the iand in a boat, whom Ritchie de- clared to be the parties who stole his luine ber, and he said he would shvot them. The friend remonstrated, but Ritchie said he would shoot him too if he said anything about it. He then with one shot killed two of the Indians, and with an oar broke open the skull of the third. The bodies were then put into the boat, to which they were fastened, and sunk in a great depth of water. Constable Briggs, of Port Elgin, is

working up the affair, and will doubtless

ebtain sufficient evidence'to make Ritchie swing—something that has long been pre- dieted for him.

English Elections.

' Tae English elections will be fought out very closely. The candidates are settling down into their places, and with the exception of the party strongholds, vo seat will be un- disputed. Mr. Gladstone has been put up in ‘nomination for Leeds, in anticipation of a de- ‘feat in Mid-leth‘an, and Lord Hartington for | Radnor, in the event of a like catastrophe in | Northeast Lancashire. Net many men famous in art or letters are found amongst the new candidates for Parliamentary honors, Mr. John Morley, the editor of the Fornight- ‘ly Review, Mr. Borthwick, the editor of the Morning Post, and Mr. Bowlea, editor of Vanity Fair, are the only literary Lames at present anneunced. Successful lawyers and merchants, and scions of noble and wealthy families supply the majority; and as another feature of the elections it is noticed that a very small number of the sitting members re- sign their seats —a fact which may be account- ed for by the low number ef new members, 140 in all, whe have found their way into the House through bye elections.

Northwest Notes. (Frem the Rapid City Enterprise.)

It has been decided by the men of B. |Treop, Mounted Police, to get up a small printing press, and establish a weekly newspaper devoted to police news and sub- jects of interest in the Northwest. It will | be edited by three members chosen by the ishareholders, and will no doubt preve an ‘interesting sheet.

| Latest information from the Souris River |coal-felds, leeated one hundred and tifty ‘miles west of Emersen, brings the cheer- ling intelligeuee that at a depth of sixty feet the miners struck a vein of coal seven feet thick, which is exactly the same thick- ness of the vein now being worked in the ‘‘Baby Mine,” forty miles west of Bis- marck, Dakota, and about one hundred and fifty miles south of the Souris River coal fields, and ceal from which is being used in the leeomotives on the Yellowstone and Dakota Divisions of the Northern Pacific Railway.

The investigation directed against the Nihilists by Melikeff is still being carried actively ferward. The theory has been broached in St. Petersburg that all these revolutionary movements have their origin among Jewish speculators. This is based on two facts. The first is that all the cir- culars issning from clandestine printing offices are written in the imperfect Russian spoken by the Jews. The second is that when the attempt was made at the Winter Palace, a telegram, giving a Bourse order and addressed te Berlin, announced the crime a few minutes before the explosion took place The person who deposited it been arrested. The cemmission of inquiry has also made this remark—That if the Nihilists beast of having adherents among the higher classes, it is always poor people who make the attempts at assassination. From this the inference is deduced that the drawing for the choice of the murder- ers is not conducted with much fairness. As to the situation in general people now seem inclined to make light of it. Another attempt was seriously anticipated for March 8, and as it failed to come off we begin tv disregard the threats of the Nihilists. Certainly St. Petersburg never appeared to be more tranquil than now. Numerous arresis, however, continue to be made.

An extraerdinary cas€ of persecution is that of Rev. Dr. Morgan Dix, of New York, who has beeu relent!=ssly pursued by an enemy for some weeks past. The method of the perse- cutor is te send letters, to which the name of Dr. Dix is forged, through the post oifice, to friends of that gentlemen in the city, inviting them to dine with him, attend a reception, spend the evening, &e), which engagements are kept to the dismay and astonishment of the past er and his family. Tradesmen, also, are ordered te send samples ef their wares to be inspected by the Deetor, and in various other ways the peace ef . mind of Mr. Dix is seriously disturbed. As yet all efforts to detect the authors of these letters have proved futile. Every person whe can be sup- posed to havea grievance with Dr. Dix, con- sequent on the official pesitien of the latter, has been ‘‘ shadowed,’ interviewed and inves tigated, but at Pre#ént without the elightest contribution tewards the elucidation of the mystery. The post office detectives, however, are as confident as they ever were that they will be succeesful in the long run, and are at werk in a very zealous and intelligent man ‘mer.

Ar Danville, Pa., on March 18th, a ter- rible railroad accident occurred by which several persens lost their lives and a num-

i ber of others were injured. A few min- jutes befere 9 o'clock a passenger train ‘bound east was switched off from the main track to allow the fast express beund west | to pass, as it does not stop there. A num _ber of passengers left the cars and strolled up and down the track in the vicinity of the train. The express train, going at a tremendous rate of speed, dashed threugh the crowd, acattering them on either side of the track. Three persons were killed outright, and it is feared several of the in- | jured will die.
