A sensation was created in social circles | in England a few months ago by the elope- | ment of Major Forsyth Grant’s wife with | her brother’s groom. Major Grant is at- | tached to the Duke of Cornwall’s Regiment, which is stationed at Gibraltar, and it was during a visit to her brother who lives near Tregauth Fort, a place several miles west of the Cornish side of the River Tamar, near Plymouth, that his fascinating wife be- came enamored of the personal charms of her brother’s groom, whose name is Henry Hearn. The two became very intimate, and in a few days eloped. A most vigurous search was made for the missing pair, but no trace of them was found in the country. Three weeks ago Mr. Eden, a lawyer from London, Eng., who was employed by Major Grant to recover his wife if possible, arrived in Quebec, he was of the opinion that they had come to Canada. The services of De- tective Sketlington, of the 1. C. K., were called into requisition,and in company with Mr. Eden that officer visited Point Levis and exhibited a photograph of Mrs. Grant to anumber of wharf officials there. They immediately recognized it as being that of a lady who arrived by the steamer ¢ ircassian on the 10th Oct. last, in company with a young man. The pair were then traced to the St. James’ Hotel, where the photegraph was again recognized. It bas since been ascertained that they took Pullman passage to Montreal, and thence to Toronto, where it is believed they are now living as man and wife under the assumed name of Purches or Nicolls. The lady's private income is £5,000 a year, but she had only £30 in cash when she left England. Mrs. Grant, who is well acquainted with Canada, having ‘eo here on her wedding tour five years ago, is described as follows :—Twenty-tive years old, five feet high, fair complexion, grey eyes, fair hair cut short in front, wore @ long cloak Jined with fur, and had on a diamond necklace when in Quebec. She left two little children in England. Hearn, the groom, is five feet eight inches high, brown hair, hazel eyes, and smail mous- tache, and has a sprightly appearance. — Toronto Globe.

The production of anthracite co#l by the Pennsylvania mines this year is estimated at 28,500,000 tons. Next year it is estima- ted that the output will be increased to 30,000,000 tons.

The Canada Gazette of Saturday contains the following : ‘‘ William Cochran Milner, of Sackville, N. B., to be a Collector in her Majesty’s Customs.” Mr. Milner was editor of the Sackville Post.

A St. Petersburg despatch reporis that the whole naval port of Cronstadt is on fire A quarter of the town is reported destroy- ed. The loss is enormous. The fire is believed to be the work of Nihilists.

The question of rapid transit between the United States and England is again being agitated. A union of the schemes of Lerd Dunraven and Lorillard, with the selection of Milford on the Welsh coast as the British port, is spoken of.

Smali-pox is rapidly spreading in Jersey City, in consequence of the filthy condition of the streets. Eleven new cases were re- ported yesterday, and two deaths. Unless prompt measures are immediately taken there will be a terrible epidemic in the city when cold weather sets in.

A farmer, on being asked to write a tes- timonial for a patent clothes wringer, produced the following :—“I bought your clothes wringer, and am hugely pleased with it. I bought a jag of wood which proved too green and unfit for use; I ran the whole load through your wringer, and have used the wood for kindling ever since.”

Gladstone, replying to a correspondent who called attention to the fact that baads of Mormon missionaries visit Great Britain annually, decoying thousands of young persons to a life of immorality in Utah, and asking if the Government could net do something to prevent the practice, says that he fears it is not a matter wherein he can interfere, as itis to be presumed that young persons go voluntarily.

A St. Petersburg despatch says a plot has been discovered for the assassination of the Czar in Karavanian street, which it was expected he would traverse in proceed- ing from the palace to Michael riding school during the fete of St. George. The conspirators were all arrested at a meeting of revolutionists in the outskirts of the town. It is stated that nothing could have saved the life of the Czar had he passed when expected.

By the death of Sir John Stewart Rich- ardson, thirteenth baronet, of Pitfoor, Perthshire, Scotland, which oceurred in Edinburg recently, another Nova Scotian girl becomes a baronet’s wife. The late Sir John Richardson, born in 1797. He married the daughter of James Hay, of Devon, and had four sons and three daughters.
