The child was attending a kindergarten, and the mother naturally in- ferred that to his teacher was due the change she was glad to notice him.
“Miss Smith teaches yon to be polite,” she remarked, making what was really an assertion in an interrogative tone.
“No, she never teaches us one bit about it,” was the instant and very emphatic re-
ly.
The mother was puzzied, for she was at a loss to account in any other way for so radicala change. A second and third attempt to discover the cause of this con- dition was attended with a similar result, -—energetic denial on the part of the child of any instruction in the matter of cour- tesy.
“Well, then, if Miss Smith doesn’t say anything, what does she do?” she asked at length, quite desperate in her desire for light upon the matter.
“She doesn’t do anything. She just walks round, and we all feel polite. We feel just as polite as—everything!” and the inquiring mother was fully satisfied.
There is a class of persons by whom every observance of etiquette is considered to be a sign of weakness, hypocrisy, or submission. The rude movement, loud voice, and disregard of one’s companions and surroundings are, on the other hand, supposed to indicate strength, honesty,
and independence. There could not be a greater. misiake nor one more fatal to the reputation of
the individual and to the comfort of those about him.
Politeness is as assential to life as is oil to machinery, and it serves a similar pur- pose. Nothing is lost by it, and much is gained, and in many ways. It makes everything easier, quieter, quicker, more barmonious and more effective. It dirin- ishes friction, that great drawback in nearly every social condition, as well as in every piece of working mechanism. The refined, quiet, considerate and corr- teons man and woman hasan immense physical, intellectual and social advantage over their fellows. In fact, the positive value of simple, every-day courtesy cannot be over-estimate.
The development of courtesy is far more a matter of example than of precept. It cannot be taught from books or black- boards. It is felt, not reasoned about. Itis given only in the form of object lessons. It appeals to the heart even more powerfully than to the head. It is not a matter of demonstration so much as of experience.
It is the finish, polish, luster, color, and fiavor of otherwise rough, dull, somber, and otherwise disagreeable existence.

Battimore, May 23.—A_ special to the News from Huntingdon, West Virginia, says: One of the greatest riots that ever happened in this section occurred at Wayne County, 25 miles south of here, yesterday afternoon. Between some of the most prominent citizens of the county there has been a grudge existing over a timber deal that was made several months ago. The parties are known as the Napier, Maynard and Aitken faction. The parties were all at Wayne yesterday and a general fight ensued which lasted for half an hour. The authorities were unable to stop it. Kirk Napier, a timberman, was shet in the neck and will probably die. Mere Napier, a merchant, was stabbed in three places and cannot recover. Mr. Aitkins,a farmer, was shot in the left hip. Tom Maynard was cut seriously in the head. About twenty men took part, and several others were seriously injured.

Rose left his home in Elora on Monday evening”about eight o’clock to drive to John Maitland’s, at Ponsonby, and pay off a mortgage of $1,614.75 which Maitland held. That was the exact amountof the money he%had on his person. Opposite a piece of bush he had occasion to leave his buggy, and just as he was returning a man stepped from the roadside and pointed a revolver at him. Another seized him from behind and they bound a cloth oyer his head 1 rifled his pockets and took off his clothes and put another suit on him, tied his hands to his side 2nd led him into the bush. “This is not the man,” said ove of the rob- bers, I don’t give a*-——,” replied the other “he’s got the stuff.” Rose begged of them to spare his life. The robbers marched their victim out of the bush, helped him into a democrat waggon, covered him over with a rug and started oft. Rose has an in- accurate idea of the time, but thinks two hours elapsed before a halt was made. He was ordered to leave the waggon and marched between his captors into anocher bush. Starting out again the party «ivove continuously till dark, when they rested for ashort time in another bush. After robbing the money they stripped him cf the clothes which at first they exchanged for his own and left him and untied his hands. They warned him that if he stirred for two hours he wonld be shot. When they drove off Rose found his overcoat within 2 few feet of where he was, and he put iton. At daylight he came across the rest of his clothes. The unfortunate vic- tim made his way to the road, travelled some distance until he reached a thorough- fare on which a telegraph line was, and turning his back to the sun, started, as he thought, home. About 7 o’clock Tuesday morning he reached Tavistock. He got a livery mau there to drive him to Strat- ford, where he sought out a former Elora pastor, Rev. Mr. Leitch, and told him of his experience. They decided it was best not to communicate with the police till Mr. Rose got home.
LITERARY NOTES,
The July issue of The Delineator, which is called the “Midsummer Number,” be- gins a new volume with a most attractive table of contents. The styles displayed are seasonable and, therefore, pictureque and graceful, and tbe faney work will please the most fastidious summer maid or matron. The opening chapter on The Voice, by the author of the Delsarte System of Physical Culture, will interest a large class of readers, ard most fascinat- ing home employment is provided in the first of a series of illustrated papers on Florentine Iron Work. The College article for the month is A Girl’s Life and Work at Weilesley, and an expert writes on Telegraphy as an Employment for Women. The Daughter's Friends is the subject of the article in the Mother and Daughter series, and some salutary advice on Bath- in@is given in the chapter on Wise Living. A novel entertainment in the shape of A Fan Party is described, the ceremonial for a Silk and Leather Wedding is given, and there is also a seasonable paper on Picnic Giving. Flower Making is specially con- sidered in The Uses of Crepe and Tissue Papers, and farther instruction is given on How to Serve Small Fruits. The illustrated papers on Knitting. George W. Smalley has written for the June Harper’s Magazine an appreciative article on his old friend and literary spon- sor, Wendell Phillips. It deals with the author’s personal recollections of the Bos- ton riots of 1860, and the period a little later when the city round to Phillips’ way of thinking regarding slavery. Mr. Smal- ley, who was one of Phillips’ aides during most of this time, speaks with a full know- ledge of the events he describes.

Boston, Mass., May 24.— After six years Commissioner Frederick Dodge, who was appointed by the United states circuit court to take evidence and assess damages in a number of typhoid fever cases which were entered in court as that time against the steamship Prussian, made his report to-day. He finds the steamship compahy is liable to each of the respondents, making a claim of damages in the sum of $20.
