orrrsws, Aug. s - (or) -- The Prices Commission, starting its work with ail investigation into the fertilizer business, found today that the profits of one of the country's main suppliers have fall- en although the value of its sales have increased by $7,000,000 since 1930. The Commissions first indust- rial witness was H. Greville Smith,

executive vice-president oi Can- ainn Industries Limited, which produces about a third of all

chemical fertilizers used in Can- ada.

Mr. Snlth provided figures which showed that in 1039 his company sold $4,287,000 worth of fertilizers and made $210,000 from it. In 1947, however, O.I.I...'s fertilizer branch made only $201,000 in net

income, although its sales had risen to $11,082,000. The company's investment in

this branch of its widespread act- ivities had roughly doubled in the interim as (he result of an ex- pansion program which Mr. Smith said had been financed entirely from ccmpany earnings and with- out recourse to borrowed funds. The 1990 investment of $4,006,000 had risen to $8,219,000 ln 1947. The earnings of this division of 6.1L. measured as a percentage return on capital, dropped from five per cent to 21.4,. per cent.

Mr. Smith presented a table showing that the cost of the same type‘ of fertilizer produced by his 0010118111‘ varied from a low of 002.70 in Quebec and Eastern Ont- erlo to a high or cs5 in the Mari- times. lie explained that price variations arose from different transportation costs.

Policemen For P.E.l. Highways

The placing of four motor-cycle policemen on the Provincial high- WBYS is being seriously considered by the i-Ion. G. H. Barbour, Min- ister of Public Works and High- ways.

Overspeeding arid disregard of the rules of the road were becom- ing so prevalent that the Minis- ter considered it was time for his Department to do somethtng to curb such practices.

The most flagrant violators of the rules of the road were the heavily-laden gravel trucks, Mr. Barbour said. Reports were con- stantly coming into his office of those vehicles rushing along the highways at speeds of 50 miles or more an hour. Apart from the damage such vehicles did to the highways at such speeds. another serious complaint was that they often crowded tourists and other visitors to the shoulders of the roads.

Mr. Barbour said it was his opinion that there were more tourists in the Province now than at any other time in the history ' of the Island. Those people were an invaluable asset to the econ- omy of the Province, and he be- lieved that saner driving by "our own people" would make condit- ions much more pleasant for the visitors.

Most highways. he said, were in good condition. Here and there improvements were necessary and svere being attended to as oppor- tunity permitted. The road to Wood Islands was somewhat "bumpy" and would receive at- tention at once, Mr. Barbour said.

OTTAWA, Aug. 3—(CP)—Fin- ancing of motor vehicle sales in June increased to 15.319 units and 914043.410 compared with 11,211 units financed for 310108.873 in June last year. an increase of 3'7 per cent in value, the Bureau of Statistics reported today.

During the first half of the year. 76-209 were financed for $70,435,- 199 compared with 52.747 units and $47,403,544 in,the first six months of 1947. ‘

June sales of 4.603 new pass- enger and commercial vehicles were financed for a total of $6.- 897006 as against 3,092 units and $5.754.013 a. year ago. Almost all the increase was -in commercial vehicles. There were 10,716 used vehicles financed against 7,232 a year before. involving $136,385 as against $4,439,880.
