Now that we as students are in the final weeks of the 1984 spring semester, many of us are busily preparing for our eventual departure from the corridors of academia onto the stage of procuring summer employment.

This transition for most of us will, present a greater challenge than ever experienced before. ‘

With youth prospects for summer employment dwindling each year due to an unstable and not-so-healthy national economy, students are forced to face up to the realities of the times.

However, in facing this reality, we as students must never allow ourselves to throw in the towel in despair nor give up the

'fight to move forward, which is inherent in us all.

Therejs hope for all of us -— what we must do is turn that

' hope into reality.

" 'I This summer, the Provincial Government has once again

decided to go ahead with plans to offer its Youth Incentive

: Program. This program provided $2,000 to enterprising youth

who wish to create employment opportunties for themselves during the summer months.

Students are thus encouraged by the Provincial Department of Industry to devise schemes that will create meaningful employment. '

resourceful way to benefit both students and the economy

as a whole.

More than ever, students are now afforded the opportunity to put their ideas and talents to work.

It is up to us to take that step forward and prove to those in charge that we are capable of such a challenge.

We all have ideas of how we want to see our lives more forward, and a youth incentive program is one means by which we can move that idea from paper to reality.

It has often been said that we are the future of tomorrow.

It is now up to us to prove to our elders that we are willing and able to stand up and be counted.

If we as young people want a better tomorrow, we must begin to show these people that we are prepared to make that

better tomorrow for ourselves.

Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can

do for your country.

Don’t expect society to give you a job on a silver platter.

If you go around thinking that, then you might as well go back to sleep and forget about trying to make it in this world.

There are numerous opportunities out there for us young people. We must, first of all, be pepared to show society that we are worth the chance and the opportunity to show what

we are made of.

This summer, let us show them that we are committed to securing a better tomorrow for all of us. “And that’s my point of view.”
