Judge Palmer Receives Degree Al King's College

HALIFAX. May 8 -(CP) - Honorury degrees of Doctor of Canon Law were conferred at the convocation of the University of Kings College today on Rev. A. E. Colanen. Saint John, N. B., and Judge H L. Palmer. Charlotte- town.

The degree 01 Bachelor of see- red Letlers was conferred on Rev Philip C. Jefferson of Halifax.

All this week officials of Fal- conwood Hospital have made available to the public through

erwepaper articles the efforts be- ing rnsde on behalf of those of this . ince who are mentally ill. They have also opened the doors to the public of the new oc- cupational Therapy building.

It is in this building that a great deal of the work necessary towards the rehabilitation . of a patient is done. Here may be fol- lowed the progress of patients from the most elementary cor- pentry work for-male patients to some really exquisite needlework by the women.

In the "men's section there are many examples of the work being done. They range from simple trays for serving to complicated rocking horses. toy boxes and s variety of other articles designed to brink plessure.to some small youngster. There is also it loom where are woven va.ri-colored items tobrightenahome. Adjacent to the workroom is a bathroom which the patients recently re- decorated themselves in bright colors.

Fine Hsndicraft

At the other end of the building is the occupational therapy room for the women patients In it may be seen many examples of very fine work done by the loom, the needle, the embroidery hook or by hand weaving of leather. some of the cuddly toys for small children would be very difficult to match even in the finer stores and the specially trimmed and bound leatuher slippers are a work of art.

In between these two rooms there is a kitchen which is the last word in modern planning. It offers a perfect place for both male and female patients to pre- pore their own morning and sf- ternoon tea as well as bake many of the choice things which are served during the rest periods when a light lunch is taken. Across the hall from the kitchen is the main delight of the worn- en-a beauty parlor completely equipped with everything needed to provide for desires from facials to permcnents.

noons each week giving the pati- ents beauty ireat.meni.t which they receive free. Each afternoonone of the patients works with her and thus perhaps becomes interested and is able at. a. later date to tske her place in the outside world of business.

Recreation loom

Just off the mania workroom is a splendidly appointed recreation room complete with card tables, Hare during their off moments patients can unuae themselves with games which run the gamut from ring toss to pocket billiards. A table is available for the latter and the equipment provided is of excellent quality. other games which are obviously enjoyed in- clude checkers snd cribbage.

The whole Occupational Therepy Department is directed by Mrs. E. G. (Joan) Nichols, s gndusta in O. Ty from the University of Tor- onto, who came here recently to undersiake the handling of the local arrangements. She is assist- ed by Miss Lorraine Maccormac and a male attendant, Mr. Arthur Muttart.

Keen interest in the work of the department is exhibited by the medical men on the staff at Fal- conwood who realize the value of it in aiding in rehabilitation. Mrs. Nichols remarked recently that a short. time ago she had 16 in the men's workroom "but there hsve been so many dischsrnes that now 'there are only 10.” supporting her efforts are Dr Alexander Murchi- son Medical " ' tandem: ma Director of Mental Health. Dr. J C. Theriault and Dr. A. A. Mac- Vicar.

The work is part of the overall plan of the Provincial Department of Health which has greatly ex- panded both its work and its fac- llliies in recent; years. Headed by Hon. A. W. Metheeon. Minister of Health and Welfare, the Depart- ment has many plans for the fut- ure. A lot of than ddpend on the obtaining of adequate personnel, At the some time the Degartment is training its own personnel through courses being given at several universities and other training centres both here and in the United States.

NEW YORK. May 8--(AP)-,WIb llam Fox, '73. one time multi- millionaire giant of the movie in- dustry, died today after a career as fabulous as any of his pictures.

He had a personal fortune of 335900.000 before the depression but went bankrupt in 1936.

Despite this comedown, he was reported "well off" at his death. He had been living quietly for some years on Long Island after serving a prison term for trying to influence a bankruptcy verdict.

Fox started his career with one shabby theatre, a Brooklyn nickel- odeon. Later he operated more than 250 theatres.

Among his great movies were "Whnt Price Glory" and "Seventh l-leaven". His stars included Theda Dara, the original screen "vamp", and Annette, I-feilerman. who made the one-piece bathing suit famous.

Two twists of fate put Fox on the pathway to fame and fortune. The first occurred when he was a S17-a-week pants presser on the Lower East Side of New York. His boss refused him a 36 raise and Fox quit.

The second came when he was talked into investing his savings of 51.600 in the Brooklyn nickel- odeon. The owner let patrons in free to convince Fox that business was good. Fox thought the crowds were paying -their way in.

The Hungarian-born Fox pro- duced his first fllms at Fort Lee. N. J. because he didn't like what his expanding nickelodeon chain was getting from established pro- ducers.

Later. Fox expanded westward and abroad with the Fax Films Corp. and the Fox Theatre Corp. Fox still was expanding his holdings when the stock market crash hit in 1929. A few months later he lost his controlling in- terest in Fox Film: and Fox Theatres.

The spotlight was of course on the Lads and Louise pipe end drum band, with Heather and Tommy Burke captivating all present by their dancing. other members of the band were, Donald, Frank and Shirley Burke. Mar- garet and Jean Rbynes. Margaret Rita. and Noreen Smith Pipe Maj- or Burke. and his amiable partner. may well be proud of the way in which the band has been coached along.

Al. Blanchard and his orchestra as usual. put on s splendid pe.-r- formance which contributed large- ly in the success of the dance. A committee from the Auxiliary. un- der the leadership of Mrs. A. Gulndon, looked after the refresh- ments in it splendid manner. for which she was heartily thanked.
