-To the Queen of Italy belongs the credit of re-establishing the manufacture of jurano lace. The industry had almost entirely died out. The (Jueen found an old woman who knew the stitch. She had her teach a number of younger women. The result is that Burano lace has again become a source of large revenue to the people of Burano.

A judge in North Carolina has recently decided that the unintentional disturbance of a religious congregation by one who conscientiously takes part in the service of singing, yet who sings su discordantly 4s to be an annoyance to others, is not in- dictable. This is doubtless good law; yet such a singer should omit to sing altogether or put his voice down toa mark at which it will not be heard as an annoyance. This is plainly his duty as a matter of common decency.

The Patric t sets forth that the total revenue of the Government is the measure of the taxation of the people. On this hy- pothesis every man pays a tax when he pays for a Government railway ticket or a Government postage stamp. The man, however, thinks (rightly) that he pays for a service performed, and not a tax imposed. The Patriot is evidentiy hard up for facts trom which to draw the conclusion that the “N. P. is doing its terrible work upon the great mass of the people who are cousumers,

Referring to the absolute control of the funds and property swayed by Mr. Booth, the author quotes Mr. Coombs, the Cana- dian Commissioner as saying: ‘‘All is made over to the General, indeed so absolutely that I much question if a friend left me a legacy of $1,000, I could legally retain it for myself and family.” But enough. The pages of ‘‘The New Papacy,” contains statements even more damaging to the A., than those already quoted. The author thus concludes one of his inter- esting chapters: ‘* In the meantime it is the duty of all christian men and good citizens to call for the renovation of the system and its return, at least, to orignal lines, or by their every endeavor to frown down a fraud so insidious and dangerous to the best interests of religion.”’

Apart from the many and serious Gefec- tigns trom the ranks of the Salvation Army, wach of which has to a certain degree been injurious to its influence and reputation, the publication of the pamphlet ** The New Papacy” has dealt it a very serious blow, from which we make bold to assert it wiil with difficulty recover. It contains many “rave indictments against Boothism, which, from the fact that an edition of 5,000 copies of the now famous pamphlet were burned by order of the Salvation Army authorities, would appear to be only too well founded.

The author, who was formerly an officer inthe S. A., while acknowledging the fact that “it has gained for itself a pesition amongst religious organizations that is phenomenal,” declares that whilst ‘* mater- ial prosperity has undoubtedly been at- tained, spirituality has been quenched, and as an evangelical agency, the Army has be- come almost a dead letter”; that ‘*its converts’ roll to-day, with an area of operation ten times extended doves not amount, week by week, to a tithe
