DEBATING SOCIETY PLACES WELL AT ATLANTICS

The Atlantic Debating Championships were held at Saint Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, the weekend of November 6-8. The UPEI Debating Society sent two teams to represent them: UPEI A, Michael Woodman and Andrew MacPherson, and UPEI B, Edward Lank and Darren Stretch.

The topics debated at the tournament were widely varied, ranging from the serious side to bordering on hilarious. For example, for the resolution -- ‘‘Be it resolved that: if sunbeams were weapons of war, we’d have had solar energy long ago.”’ -- was interpreted by one team to mean that spending limits in election campaigns should be removed (election campaigns being similar to wars) and by another team to mean that, now that Madonna has finished with sex, she needed something to make a more lasting impression on American Culture. The team proposed that she have a child and, if society morals allowed, marry him at the appropriate time (Don’t ask me how they got this out of the sunbeams resolution!).

The UPEI team of Edward Lank and Darren Stretch went undefeated through the opening four rounds. In the quarter finals they faced a Dalhousie team and prevailed by a one point margin, only to be sacrificed on the altar of higher Dal debating in the semi-final round by a pesky law student and a fourth year Poly-Sci major. Darren and Edward’s team placed third in the Competition with a 5 and 1 record, and the Dal team that defeated them in the semi-final round went on to win the Atlantic title.

Edward Lank placed sixth overall in the competition in accu- nulated points from his debating rounds.

The other component to most debating tournaments is public ‘peaking. In this competition, another member of our society, Michael Woodman, ranked fourth overall. The public speaking Competition is impromptu style, where the competitor receives his or her topic and has thirty seconds before beginning to speak. This part of the competition is extremely difficult to do well in, and is therefore only optional. Many debaters chose not to Compete, and placing well in this area is a measure of a debater’s ability to react under pressure.

Contrary to popular belief, university debating does not take long hours of preparation. For example, the plan to impregnate Madonna is one that anyone familiar with Madonna can deal with. A tournament is a chance to meet people and havea lot ofjun and a few good laughs.

In early February, the society is planning to send members to the McGill Invitational Tournament in Montreal. If this sounds like a good time to you, why not drop by Alumni Gymnasium, in the gymnasium, for one of our:meetings or even part of a meeting held Mondays from 4:30 - 6:00 or Thursdays from 2:30 - 4:30 and see what university debating is all about. BEB BPR RRR ERR FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As fall quickly turns its back on us and leaves us to the mercy of winter, I am still able to think of the warm reception I received when I arrived on campus only a few short weeks ago. I’ve found the people of P.E.I. very friendly and sincere and hope that I can return this hospitality in the same honest way.

Food for thought is my way to talk to students, staff, and faculty as a single unit. I hope to meet and converse with as many people as possible on an individual basis. Marriott has been on the campus for over 11 years and has tried to improve their relation- ships over the years. This year, with the longer hours at the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall more and more people are using the facility in the ‘‘offhours’’ between meals. The dining hall may become a central gathering area for coffee breaks and social- izing as the old Steele Cafeteria was in the ‘‘good old days’’. We encourage groups and individuals to visit our cash line for a greatly improved and increased menu.

Customer surveys were recently distributed in our different areas of operation and results will be posted shortly along with action plans and responses to comments made. I would like to personally thank everyone who participated in the surveys, your time and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

**Think Green’’ is a popular slogan for environmental groups everywhere. Marriott is environmentally aware and would like to encourage every one to do their part for our big island called Earth. Recently, we have been selling enviro mugs on campus. Youcan help by either using one of our mugs or by bringing your own mug for coffee. We'll deduct 5 cents from your purchase as an added incentive. Our foam cups are environmentally friendly. First off, they contain no CFCs; and they also take less energy to manufacture and kill a lot less trees. Although not perfect, they will help until every one starts being more aware and saves our land for uses other than landfills. The other small area we’ ll be trying to help in is: the use of china service for coffee and catering services around campus. I am very inter- ested in hearing from other concerned citizens about this very important issue.
