Before leaving Vernon River Bridge, a reference should be made to the cheese factory in its immediate neighborhood. That this factory gets first prize for cheese is ample testimony tothe care be-towed by the farmers in feeding their cattle, as well ac handling their milk, assisted by the fact of their factory being well manag- ed. Another factory which is flourishing was passed at Orwell Cove—the only two met with so far—where at least four or tive should be in operation. Vernon River has some good farmers—the palm is hard to decide—and it may be between Mr. BD. P. Irving and Mr. Owen Sullivan. It is said the latter has netted the highest result per cent., whilst the former’s herd, might fairly compete wi kh Jacob’s berds at Haran. Where all are doing so well, it might be unfair to be more invidious. In the distance 6u high vantage ground is that imposing and splendid edifico— the Catholic chapel of Vernon River, which is a living monumert to the zeal and devotion of its people. Rev. Dr. Doyle is the spiritual director and pastor. He is alarge-hearted and generous man, who not only looks after the epiritual welfare of his flock, but loves to see them in the front rank of agriculture and educational progress. His fine herd of Jerseys is a fair example of what he would desire his parishioners to aim at, and they must have had a stimulating eftect on the dairy interest of this section. Near by is the beautiful residence of Jas. Hayden, Esq., aiso what is known and has been known as Hayden’s mills from time almost im- memorial. Here a!so is the well—-kncw>, residence, shop, &c., of that genial- hearted and true Trishman, George O’Neill, Esq. The reputation of his place for whole-souled hospitality can hardly be surpassed. Mr. O’Neill’s resid- ence Is uow connected by telephone with the city and other telephone siations on the Island. The boon which the Tele- phone Company has conferred onthe Is- land by extending its lines is incalculable. There are quite a number of places, how- ever, where the wires should reach. Op- posite Mr. O’Neill’s is the residence and office of Dr. Collins, who has been here for a few years. Heis quite popular, and has a good practice. Vernon River is a tine place, and its inhabitants are thrifty and comfortable. The lands on both sides are thickly populated, and like the tree which David referred to as being planted near a river, which yielded its fruit in due season, :o itis here. Lord McAulay re- fers tothe love which rivers excite on those who live on their banks, and gives many in-tances--the Nile, the Rhine, the Jordan, the Ganges, &c.,- aud the reader can add many more. And he asks: “Is it that rivers have, in a greater degree than almost any other inanimate object, the appeararce of animation, and some- thing resembling character?” He says, “they are sometimes slow and dark-look- ing, sometimes fiercer and impetuous; sometimes bright and dancing.” “The attachment,” be says,“‘of the French for the Khone may be explained in to a natural sympathy. It is a vehement, rapid stream. It seems cheerful and fall of animal spirits, even to petulance;” but adds, “this is all fanciful.” We must not, however, digress, not even to qaote Lord McAulay. But at the sametime we are reminded that not far from Vernon River, even on its banks, is the thriving settlement of Glencoe, principally inhabited by that noble race of McDonalds, descended from the Glencoe McDonalds in Scotland. However Lord McAulay’s History of England may be valued,it is un- doubted that he went much too far in the cold-b'eoded, perfidious and treacherous massacre of 1692. Further on, at the ex- treme head of the river, is Alberry Plains. Striking out to the north is Avondale and Hermitage. As we go from Vernon River to Ci.arluttetown, before reaching Millcove isa ucat residence and shop kept by Mr. Acorn, who does a thriving business. But before bidding adieu to Vernon River we must not forget the oyster and smelt-fish— ing, now rapidly developing. The oysters of Vernon River have quite a reputation as well as those of Orwell Bay, and a new impetus has lately been given to botb smelt and oyster fishing here. In passing through Millview one is struck by the fice residences of Messre. Sheidow, Edward Grant end Walter Grant, Jas. H. and Peter Bourke, Hynes and Dunphy, &e.

The ten-mil—house and Vicinity is now. the scene for triumphs i: agriculture aud the —_ peace- ful arts instead of rum-drinking. This is

principally due to Mr. Delahanty, who is a progressive farmer. Mr. McGillivray isa seddler and will supply you with a neat and stylish sett of harness for your trotter orastrong and serviceable one for your draft horae. Mr. Dodds has here a very fine orchard and fruit avd flower garden. You should see his hurdle fence, which has stood the test of fifteen years. It is ten feet high and quite good yet. Mr. Dodds ean give you many points on fruit

culture. A road goes south to Cherry Valley and China Point, two beautiful

sections where much attention is given to dairying and agriculture. The Irvings, Mc- Innis’s, the Youngs, Murphys, Cranes, McIsaac’s and Mutches are met with. Dr. Beers attends to the physical ailments of the people. A neat but small English. Church shows to good advantage, in its cosy nook. Passing on to Charlottetown, the tannery of John McKachern, Esq, is met with, and the fruit-canning estab ish- ment of Messrs. Jones & McRae is ceen in the distance. This firm deserves well of the farmers of this province for the firm hold they have taken of the fruit canning busi- ness. Their canned fruit is ahead of any- thing imported, and they deserve success. Messrs. Alex. McRae, Edward Wood, and others, are staunch farmers. Albert Bos- well, Esq., is leading in the raising of prize sheep. Messrs. Richards and Lane have beautiful residences. In the distance is Pownal Village, with its picturesqus situ- ation. Its farmers are thriving. Its mechan- ics are industrious, its inhabitants are en- terprising, its clergy are zealous, and the place lovely. Mr. Acorn runs the May—

Canada in the future will be thor- oughly independent of her neighbor. In- deed, it is probable that American vessels will seek the Canadian lock. The in creasing growth of Canada’s marine ser— vice, the rapid development of her great West, and the consequent increase of com merce, will be stimulated by the posses sion of an independent waterway between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It may seem premature to refer to what the eftect of the new Canad’an canal has already been; but for the three weeks in Septem- ber following the opening of the cana! an average of about twenty vessels per day,

having an aggregate registered tonnage of considerably over three hundred thousand tons were locked through our new Cana- dian canal. These figures speak for themselves, as the canal will, in the future, speak for itself in even more convincing numbers.” ** How Bateese Came Home,” by W. H. The Toronto Globe reports that “the outlook for the trade in spring good; is fairly satisfactory. Country merchants, it says, are disposed to order more liberal— ly of spring dry goods. Sugars. the Globe continues, are likely to be higher.
