Porsonep By Eatine Ice Cream.—A woman named Harrison, residing on Camp- bell road, was poisoned Monday night by eating some ice cream purchased from a street vendor. A doctor was sent for and with much difficulty put the woman beyond danger.—Halifax Mail.

Tae Exeecrep Happens.—-Last night,about ten o'clock, a lady fell into the waterworks trench at the corner of Prince and Euston Streets. Her cries for help brought several persons to the place, and she was lifted out with considerable difficulty. We have not heard the extent of her injuries.

More Istanp Horses.—Mr. Robert Stead and Mr. S. B. Titcomb, the former with nineteen and the later nine P. E. Island horses, have arrived in the city. The horses, which are being baited at Smith’s stables, Germain street, are all intended for the American market.—St. John Tele- graph.

The announcement that Joseph Pope, the Premier's Private Secretary, would shortly be appointed Under Secretary of State, is understood to be premature, although no man judicious ,or popular appointment could be made.
Diocesan Synod.
Hauirax, June 29.
The Diocesan Synod of Nova Scotia met this morning. There are 120 delegates present, 60 lay and 60 clerical.
Bishop Stevens, of Brooklyn, N. Y., as- sisted in the morning services. Bishop Courtney read a masterly address, being a revised history of the Church and her present position and needs. He said the Church in P. E. Island was in a better con- dition than reported to him, and he pro- phesied a good future for King’s College. The Cathedral corner stone was laid, but he thought in a poor place, and it would be much better to tear St. Luke’s down and build the Cathedral on its present site.

_ Albert E. Kralle, another American fugi- tive, was arrested at the Windsor Hotel to-day. He was employed by Hirch & Co., button manufacturers, New York, and committed forgeries on them to the extent of several thousand dollars.
Pitcher, the Providence Bank defaulter, feels confident of getting out of his pre- dicament and enjoying the money he brought with him.
The First Arrival. Cuicaco, June 28,
The first transatlantic vessel that ever ar- rived at Chicago steamed into the river to- day. It was the Roseland which left Sun- derland, Eng. one month ago. She is brand new from tne shipbuilder’s yard, and brought a cargo of Portland cement from London. It was reshipped from Montreal and Kingston to get here through the Wel- land. The Rosedale isa propeller, and a very fastone. She will not go back to Eng- land, but will be kept onthe Great Lakes, between Toronto and Port Arthur.

New Lonpon, Conn., June 29.
The annual University four mile straight- away eight-oared boat race, between Yale and Harvard, was rowed between five and six p. m., over the Thames course. Yale led all the way, and won by twenty- four lengths—time 20.10; Harvard 21.20. The series of races now stands: Yale won six, Harvard five. ‘ Yale’s time is the fast- est ever made on the river. They gave the best exhibition of eight-oared rowing ever seen on the Thames.
The Battle of “Home Rule.”

Morely, in a speech at Chester this even- ing said the Liberals still had plenty of time to win the Irish battle to which they were determined to devote themselves firmly, resolutely and unflinchingly. The recent debate in Parliament compelled the Government to admit that the National League was ubiquitous, and that crime in Ireland was dependant upon coercion. The action of the magistrates destroyed the reign of law and substituted an arbitrary will of practically an irresponsible power.

Miss McGarry’s voice is musical, her enunciation perfect, her powers of imitation and imper- sonation great, and she has studied and understands her authors thoroughly.
