Needless to say, East-West could have made quite a few clubs, but they were right in preferring to double the two-diamond contract. That is. they would have been right, ii they had defended with even elementary skill!

West opened the singleton spade: East put up the ace and, in a great hurry to give his partner a spade ruii. returned the eight- spot. as a signal that he could get back on lead with a high-ranking sult..hearts. West duly ruffed the spade retum (declare: having play- ed low) and returned his heart queen, no doubt hoping to find East with both the ace and king. East put up his ace on this trick and gave West another spade ruli.

West now exited with a heart. Deoiarer won with tho king and played two rounds oi’ diamonds. West was back on lead with the diamond king (since he had lack- ed the nerve to unblock that card) and now he had toldad a. club from the king to the North-south terrace. Naturally. declarer play- ed a low from dummy. and when he won with the queen, the two- diamond contract was "home." Considering that West had shown diamond length by doubling such a low contract East was in too great a hurry to make his partner ruitl I! he had returned the club jack. the declarer would have been 1n a horrible position and. no~matter how well he played the hand. would have, gone down at least three tricks (more prdbably. lour tricks). East's ability to overrufi dummy in clubs‘ should have given him the correct clue.

“I'm glad I wasn't there,” grunied Prickly Pork. Ha was in a tree just above Peter and Jumper. He had been listening and saying nothing.

“How do you know he was hungry enough to do such a foolish thing as that?" Peter persisted.

“Because starvation makes Iolk desperate, and desperation will dare anything. That Bear was starving. It was up on the Great Mountain. That Bear had waked up from his winter sleep too soon and couldn't go to sleep again. ‘Phat was a hard winter. A lot o1 folks starved. I guess some starved to death. I nearly starved to’ death myselI that time. I had come back too early," crooked Blacky the Crow's cousin.

“Even i! he wesstarving I don't believe he would-have dared touch a. Porcupine. I would have to see it done to believe it." declared Peter.

“I did see it." crooked the Raven.

Peter sat up very. straight, his eyes wide with excitement. "What did the Porcupine do to him?" he cried.

“Nothing? replied Croaker. “He didn't have a chance to do eny- thing. That Bear was loo smart to give him a chance."
