Your attention has been drawn to the unportance of ihe part that the body plays in the human economy, not only with regard to muscular force but also with reference to the fact that through it alone can the higher faculties of our being fiod expression. The oft-quoted phrase “Mens sana in corpore sano” Fuggests an ay pre- ciation of the depevdence of the mental upov the physical. But does this appre- ciation alweys finds dne recognition in educational justitutions? Are the claims of the body never overlooked? Are _ its requirements always considered? Have there been no inetances in which the lives of children bave been clouded and marred because proper atiention has not been given to ruch matters? In our anxiety to secure the best possible system of instruc tion, is there not atendency to accord to them scant consideration? Ought not pecaliarities of temperament, of organic strength or weakness to be taken into ac- count in attempting to develop and cortrol the latent capabilities of childhood? One boy has a weak and poorly nourished body and an abnormally active mind. Is it not little ehort of criminal to stimulate the latter? He avoids all vigorous sports because he dreads exposing his weakness, and fears the rough usage of his comrades. Is it not ab-olutely needful to encourage him to develop his bodily powers? If the state assumes the duty of educating our children, is it uot morally responsible for reeing that this shall be carried out under proper physiological conditions? There are nany difficulties to be met and con- quered, but any system of education which does not attempt to overcome them, which fails to recognize the importance of secur- ing an harmonious development of all the powers which go to make up true man- hood and womanhood falls very far short of what we may fairly expect.

Our school playgrounds, the encourage- ment we extend to athletic sports are proof that we not wholly oblivious to the claims of the body. But granting that we provide a certaia amouat of exercise for the muscles, is this all that needs to be done? Is due advantage taken of the opportuni- ties afforded of developing the mora! qual- ities through pkysical exercise? Do we realize that the Englishman holds the rank he does in the world to-day not in virtue of what he learned in the classroom but because he developed certain moral qualities, acquired mainly through exercise in field sports? Speaking in this convec- tion, Kingsley says: “Woe to the class or the nation which has no manly physical training. > “Be sure! Ought not the ethics and discipline of the play-ground to be as much an object of care as the work of the class- room ? Athletics in themselves are of litle use save as @ means to an end. But is it a matter of ind fference whether our boys are taught pluck, endurance, love cf fair play, hatred of meanness, subj -c- tion to discipiine, or their opposites? = Is ita question of no moment whether ut fuotball and cricket they acqaire the man- nera of a c'own, the laiguage of the stums and the brutality of the prize-fighter, or courage and true manliness ia connection with courtesy and ¢elf-restvaint? Are these last qualities of minor importance compared with the ability to repeat a problem of Euclid, or add vp a column of figures? Loxpox, Merch 10.—De-patches from official resources in Berlin say that a cer- tain measure of the blockade of Greece must be observed, though it may not be immediately enforced. The form of blockade which Germany favors is som¢- thing similar to that which was put into operation in 1886, which was pre eminen ently a peaceful blockade. Under tie Germano plan, as outlined in the de-patch, a furtnight should elapse before any action is taken. At the expiration of that time a pacific form of blockade should be put into operation, under which any Greek or other vess-] that may be arrested will not be confi-cated, but wil! be released when the blockade is raised.
