A farmer writes to the Manitoulin Expositor praising that portion of Ontario, and pointing out how superior it is to most of the land in the western States. The prospects of farming in that part of Ontario, he contends, are excellent, and adds: ‘A man cannot be an intelligent farmer unless he takes and reads a good newspaper.” That farmer is a sensible man.

~The London Advertizer remarks that in a country like Canada everyoue should possess the accomplishment of swimming. Parents should teach their children to swim, not the boys alone but the girls as There is no knowing when the knowledge may come in useful, and once learned itis never forgotten. Encourage the children to swim. They can learn in water that does not reach above the waist, and so without danger. Remember this: So long as the lungs are fully inflated and the hands and the arms kept lower than the head it is a physical impossibility to SINK.

The St John Sun directs attention to the fact that a considerable quantity of butter has been shipped to the Montreal market from Boston. The duty on butter imported into Canada is four cents per pound. The farmer can ask the following question of the next advocate of commercial union who happens along: If Montreal dealers can buy butter in Boston and pay the duty on it, how much better a _ butter market isthe United States than Canada, and how much would be gained in this respect if we had Unrestricted Reciprocity with the 60,000,000 who make up the butter makers and eaters of the United States /

The Electric Company.

Ar theaunual general meeting of the share- holders of the Prince Edward Island Elec- tric Company, held yesterday afternoon, the following directors were elected : Lewis Carvell, L. H. Davies, C. F. Fraser and D. A. Starr.

We understand that the change in the Board resulted from the fact that the old Board declined to act unless all of them were re-elected. This the Montreal and Halifax shareholders declined to accede to, and holding th: majority of the stock, they elected Mr. Davies as representing Mon- treal interests, and Messrs. Carvell, Fraser and Starr the Halifax capital. We trust that the new directors will be as liberal to us as their predecessors, who last year lit up our gardens for the whole summer free of expense.

At a meeting of the Directors, Mr. L. H. Davies was chosen as President and Mr. Lewis Carvell as Secretary-Treasurer of the Company.

It has been decided to pnt in an incandes- cent plant to supply houses, stores, offices, churches and halls at a cheap rate.

William O’ Brien’s service of papers on Lord Salisbury, together with Parnell’s very com- plimentary reference to the Irish patriot be- fore the Parnell Commission, has made O'Brien the subject of an unusual amount of talk during the week. He claims damages for libel in respect of a speech delivered at Watford by the Premier. All reporters of the London newspapers and news agencies who

Policemen vs. Pugilists.

, FIGHT TO A FINISH THAT WAS NOT CON- DUCTED ACCORDING TO MARQUIS OF QUEENS- BERRY RULES——THE PUGILISTS WORSTED.

THREE young men—Angus Steele, Rich- ard Cronin and Patrick Baldwin—appeared before His Honor the Stipeadiary Magis- trate thisforenoon. They were charged with being drunk and disorderly, and with interfering with the police in the discharge of their duty. Mr. Fred. Peters appeared for the prisoners. The witnesses examined were police ofticers Bradley and Taylor, Dr. S. R. Jenkins, John McLellan and Isaac Murley.

Sergeant Bradley testified that shortly before one o'clock yesterday afternoon the Marshal told him there was’a number of men acting ina disorderly manner on Street, near Euston, and that so soon as officer Taylor came back from dinner the two were to eo and see what was the matter. He left the station to meet Taylor. When he got to Coombs’ corner he found that the men had moved down Euston street and that Taylor had followed them. He went after them, overtaking Taylor. The two follow- ed the men te Thorne’s, on Lower Spring Park Road. There were four of them— the three prisoners and James Butler. The men were at Thorne’s door trying to get in, and a woman was trying to shut the door against them. As soon as thev saw wit ness the prisouer Steele cried out ‘‘———-—— Bradley ; you can’t arrest me.” They then told the woman to shut the door, which she did,and they went out intofthe yard,and met the men come rushing through the gang- way, looking like people who wanted to fight. Witness ordered them out of the yard as he saw little use in two men attempting to arrest four. Stesle put up his hands, and advancing in puglistic fashion, made use of the same vile language as before. All were drunk—Steele the worst of the lot. Witness arrested Steele— taking him by the right arm and Taylor by the left. Immediately afterwards he received a blow on the temple. He could not tell who struck him, but believed at the time it was Cronin. The blow stunned him for a while, and Steele was released. As soon as Steele was released he squared off before Taylor as if to strike him. ‘Saylor }struck him and knocked him down. No sooner was Steele knocked down than Baldwin made for Taylor, and was as quickly laid out. By this time Steele had regained his feet and made another attack on the officer, but witness could not see what success rewarded his effort, as he was keeping an eye on Baldwin. Then Cronin made «a rush for witness, remarking: Bradley; what are you doing ?” Witness struck Cronin and he staggered back, falling over a pile of brick. Witness was in the act of going over to the assist- ance of Taylor, just after dropping Cronin, when he was struck from behind and fell to the ground stunned. When he recovered he found Crorin on top of him with his hands about his throat. Dr. 8. R. Jenkins then came jalong and pulled Cronin off The next thing witness knew he was in a scuffle with Baldwin, He did not know which of the two began first. He hada piece of a brick in his hands during the melee, with which he struck Baldwin. After the two tusseled up and dowa the yard some time, Cronin, who had got away from the Doctor, came over and struck witness several times frora behind. He was pretty sure it was Cronin who struck him. He made for Cronin and gave him a guzzling. Then Baldwin came up again, and witness and he clinched, getting into astable, where the two were parted by Butler, who took Baldwin away. By this time, all concerned were pretty well winded. The officers, being afraid of damaging their coats and ca73, went into Thorne’s where they put t)em away, and returned to the yard to make another effort to arrest the men. When they got to the yard, the men had disappeared. By this time officer Doyle had appeared on_ the scene, and the trio, aftera lengthy chase, and a great deal of trouble, succeeded in landing their men in the station.

Dr. S. R. Jenkins testified to being driving past Thorne’s at the time of the row, and going into the yard to see what was the matter. He tried to get Cronin away, but he would not come. Bradley came up and Cronin madec rush for him. The two clinched. Bracley fell upon his knees, with Cronin holding him &by the throat, on top. He pulled Cronin off and afterwards took him into the house. While witness was holding Cronin he saw Bradley follow Baldwin into the stable. Bradley had what appeared to have been a half brick in his hand. Witness held Cronin all this time and did not see him strike Bradley or anyone else.

Officer -Taylor corroborated Bradley’s testimony as to the row in Thorne’s yard. He said that before this — while he was following the men down Euston Street —-one of them saw him and called out: ** You , Taylor; come down and we'll bust you.” This-was said while the officer was about half a block off. While in Thorne’s yard, a woman asked the offi- cers to put the men out, but they refused to zo when they were told.

John McLellan said that he passed through the crowd on the sidewalk before they got to Thorne’s, and heard them dis- cussing the probability of being arrested. One of them said: ** There’s not a crowd in Charlottetown able to take us!” An- other of the crowd (Baldwin, he thought,) told the man who made the remark not to talk like that. He also heard one of the crowd call out to Taylor, as stated by that oflicer in his testimony.

Isaac Murley said he saw Bradley on his knees in the yard, with Cronin on top of him, with his arms about his neck, as if to prevent him from going to the assistance of Taylor, who was looking after Steele. He also saw Baldwin run in between Taylor and Steele, but could not swear that he struck the officer. He saw both Steele and Baldwin knocked down. by Taylor, and saw Jenkins take Cronin away. After Baldwin got away he went over to take Cronin’s part, and witness thought struck Bradley while he was on his knees. The blow caused Bradley to release his hold on Cronin, and he at once made for Baldwin, following him into the stable and beating him about the head with a piece of brick that he had in his hand.

Mr. Peters summed up for the prisoners, and His Honor, after a few remarks, delivered judgment. He sentenced Bald- win to pay a fine of $30 or go to jail for thirty days, and Steele and Cronin each to {wo month's fmprivvnment with hard laber.
