Soldier and Wife

Separated in the sinking of the steamship, a Toronto soldier, Gnr. A. R. Fielding. and his wife wire re-unlwd after drifting for hours in the icy “raters. Fielding clung to the bottom of a smashed life- boat for the long interval before rescue crime, whie sllven o! those who had reached the raft with him slipped, (m0 by one. back into the water and were not seen again.

"My first thought was 0f my wife. whom I was, bringing to New- foundland with me. I rushed dorm to her stateroom and ot her on deck, where 1 put my ifebelt on her.

"I threw her ovirboard. I thong-ht it twins the only chance. I saw one woman with a baby. She gave me the child. I passed it to someone on a raft and she went back for another. She niver re- appeared. I nevdr saw the baby again elthFT."

Lifeboat capsized
