George Gee took a. pass from Johnny Wilson. a. rookie from Wings‘ Omaha. farm club, to give Detroit a. 2-1 lead. Thirty four sec- onds later, Jimmy Mel-‘adden pok- ed e. short one through the legs of New York goaltender Chuck Ray- ner to make it 3-1.

The lop-sided play in the period was reflected by the goaltcnders‘ stops _ 12 for Rayner as against five for Lumley.

Apart from a. breakaway by Gee. on which Rayner made a terrific stop. Detroit made only scattered efforts to increase their lead in the last period. But their solid defence gave Rangers few good chances to score.

Lumley had 24 saves to Rayner’.- a. but the New York goalie had the tougher evening as most of the New York shots gave the Red Wing nctminder little difficulty.

The teams meet in the second ume of the best-of-seven series at Toronto Thursday night in the first of two Ranger "home" games. New York was forced onto neutral ice when a circus wok over Maci- ison Square Garden for an extend- ed stay last week.

Pori Arthur Wins Western Junior Semi-Final

PORT ARTHUR. April 11—(CP) -—Port Arthur Bruins tonight won the Western Canada Memorial Cup st-ml-final. defeating Brandon Wheat Kings 6-2. They took the besi-of-sevcn hockey series 4-3.

The western final with Regina Pals will open with games here Thursday and Saturday.

Baseball Nola Anxious for Court Action

NEW YORK. April 11 —— (AP) — Organized baseball again is threat- ened with a suit which might cause it considerable embarrass- mcnt.

Al Widmar. a pitcher who is the property of St. Louis Browns. has threatened to bring legal action to make that club pay at least $l0.000 for his services.

Lt Widmar goes through with his threat, and is upheld. it would mean that every player who thought he was not receiving cnoufh money for his services coul demand what he thought he was worth. '

Baseball's foundation is shaky at best. It wants no part of legal actions which might bring it to court to defend its practices.

If Widmar were in another line of endeavor and was not offered what he thought he was worth by one firm. he could walk across the street and try another.

In baseball, he is at the mercy of the club, and he either takes what he is offered. or else.

it's that kind of business that makes baseball want to steer clear of a close examination by the courts at any cost. It dodged the threat of a showdown in the Danny Gardella case.

During his “vacation" from the big leagues, Danny starred with Drummondville of the Quebec Provincial League, until this year outside organized baseball.

Late last season Gardella sign- ed with Si. Louis Cardinals, for- giving and forgetting. The Car- dinal owner, Fred Saigh, denied Danny. received a large chunk of cash for letting the whole thing drop.

Now comes Widmar with a new threat. It would seem that organ- ized basebsll‘s lawyers might see more action than some of the players.

Bevan. Sr.. the man who day 'in and day out. year after year, handles the stop watch and oper- ates the clock and big score-board so that all and sundry know just what is what at all times. . . . .

Known to every player and fan as “Bill", he has been carrying out this job at the Forum in his ever

efficient manner for years be- yond this writer's memory. it doesn't matter whether it is a

“Big Four" game or a midget or girls’ contest. Bill is always on the job to start every period and finish it with the bell and keep the time clock at the correct time regardless of how many whistles or time-outs, and the score tallied correctly. 0 O I

He is also the custodian" of that section of the rink known as “sinners' row". With stop watch in hand. he is ever alert to give the player serving his penalty ample time to get back on the ice at the expiration of his time. and where the minor league youngsters are concerned. is not adverse to informing the "small fry" that they are of much more value to their team on the ice than in the

penalty box. This. however, is always given with a friendly smile.

Timer Bevan, who has probably seen more hockey players come and go than any other sports lover in the City during his day, is also a member of the City Fire Dc- pariment and operates his own bicycle repair shop on Passmore Street. When he is not officiating at hockey matches, speed skating events or other such athletic events that require an efficient and capable man with a watch, he is devoting his attention to his work and his home and family.

Those of the press, whose lot it is to cover the games as the sea- son rolls along and are responsible for exact lime§’of goals, etc., also owe a debt of gratitude to Bill for his ever ready and willing as- sistance to keep them posted, and this writer for one. wishes to say “thanks Bill" and may we sec you on deck again next year when the 1950-51 season rolls around.

PHILADELPHIA. April 11 (AP)—Philadel-phia Phillies yester- day lost one of their prized bonus pitchers. Charley Blcknell, to Bog. ton Braves.

Blclmell went to the Braver for the $10,000 waive; price, 1-re am, the Phlls 820,000 when he was

signed out of Plainfield. N. J. high school. The 21-year-old Bioknell has

been a victim of the bonus rule for two seasons. Under the regu- lation, a club signing a piaye; {or- a bonus can send him down for no more than one year of minor- lcague training.

Then the parent club must carry the bonus player on its own roster. If it places the player on the waiver list and he is claimed. the parent club must surrender him to the clalmlng club.

The I-"hils, who didn't want to lose Bickncll. carried him for two seasons and he spent most of those campaigns on the bench.

The Phils decided that all Blok- nell needed was one season of regular starting assignments in triple-"A" baseball. They put hkn.

Montreal Juniors Win Opener From Guelph

MONTREAL. April 11 — (CF) — A vastly superior Montreal Can- sdiens sextet scored a 4-2 victor? over Guelph Biltmores here to- night in the opening game of the best-of-seven Eastern Canada jun- ior hockey final series.

An estimated 8,000 persons watch- ed the Montrealers take command of the contest after a scoreless first period.

Dickie Moore paced Montreal with a, pair of goals while Art Rose and Bob Dawson were the other snipers for the winners.

The brother combination of Andy and Frank Bathgate accounted for both Guclph's goals which came in the third period.

The game was a rough, hard- fought affair with atotal of 20 penalties handed out, Montreal drawing 11 of the banishments.

But Canadiens proved to have a wide edge in play as they outshct the Ontario champions 30-21.

Ottawa Hoop Team To Meet All-Stars Tonight

Open Trout Season In Ont. On Saturday

TORONTO. April 11 — (CP) - The trout season in Ontario will open April 29. a Saturday, instead of May 1. the customary opening date. Lands Department officials. announcing the change, said the limit for the number of trout a person may catch in a day will be l5 this year. Préviougly it was 20. Pike and pickerel season will open May 15.

Make Plans For Holland cove camp

The Y. M. C. A. Holland Cove Camp Committee has completed early plans for the coming camp season. For the first time there will be a two weeks’ Girls’ Camp. Dates for the season are as fol- lows:

July 3 to July l5—Girl.1' Camp.

July 17 to July N-Boys‘ Camp (ages 9. 10. 11 years).

July 31 to August 12 — Boys’ Camp (ages l2, 13, 14).

In recent weeks a series of meetings has been held at which the newly appointed purchasing, properties. and finance committees have been active. These groups are responsible for preparing the camp and planning -for its needs over the camping season.

New additions to the camp this year include an ice house which has been constructed and filled during the winter. Plans are under way for repairs to the. buildings, improving staff quart- ers. and levelling off a sports field.

Miss Marjory Hill, Red Cr-ogg nutrition expert. and Mrs. E. Tay- lor of the Committee have been busy preparing an appetizing and nutritious menu for each day of camp. It was announced at a recent meeting that Mrs. Carrie MacNeill would_ once again be camp cook. For the past few sea- sons Mrs. MacNeill has been a camp favorite for her interest in all the campecs as well as for her excellent meals.

To _Head Tennis Club At Enthusiastic Meeting

At the annual meeting of the Charlottetown Tennis Club, held at the home of the retiring pres- ident. Mr. J.'B. Johnston. last evening, Mr. Jack Kenny was elected president for the year 1950.

It was the most largely attend- ed meeting to be held by the club in a great many years, and was carried out with enthusiasm and success "in a manner that

Taking over the chair on his election. following the tabling of the various annual reports. presi- dent Kenny made a brief but en- coursging address to the meeting. in which he said that in his long association with the club. never before had be seen such a aplen- did turnout of members at an an- nual meeting. “which certainly augera well for the success and future of the club." He also said that he knew it has been a hard job to revive tennis-here since its slump during the war years. “but now is the time to drive ahead with a full scale campaign that will put the club to the forefront of local sporting activity again."

HALIFAX. April 11 — (CP) .. A Maritime Junior hockey school will be held here April 19-21 un. der the sponsorship of St. Mary’: Hockey Club. St. Mary‘: officials announced tonight.

The school is open to boys be. tween the ages of 18-I9 who will be eligible for junior competition next season. It was hoped to have a National Hockey League star direct the school and Mom- real Canadlens have indicated they would help, officials added.

Assisting in the instruction will be Marty Barry. former N. H. 1., player and coach of the St. Mary‘; Maritime senior league champions.

Other assistants will be two Halifax natives who got their start with St. Mary's Juniors—Doug (Dugger) McNeil, defenceman with Montreal Royals of the Quebec Senior League last season. and forward Bert Hirschfield who finished the season with Canadiens after starting with Cincinnati Mo. hawks. their American League farm club.
