No wonder that Sir Richard Qartwright walked out ofthe Honse of Commons while Mr. Davin was reading the Hunting- don Gleaner’s editorial on the railway sud- sidies. The Gleaner is one of the best edited and most respected newspapers advocating Liberal priaciples, and it is no small compliment to the editorial to say that it read very much like one of Sir Richard’s old speeches. It must have come to him witha shock as though the ghost of his former ce'f had come to rebuke the doughty old statesman for his silence when a word from him would save millions of dollars to the people of Can~ ada.

We dislike to say anything harsh of Sir Richard Cartwright. His past services to Cauada, his intellectual attainments, Lis hovorable record, entitle him to the re- spect of all Canadians irrespective of party. But these are the very things that make his present apathy so strange. This whole wonderful session, with its gigantic and un- precedented schemes for robbing the Can» adian taxpayer and its unequalled revela~ tions of electoral fraud and corruption has produced nothing so wonderful as the silence of Sir Richard Cartwright !

He has been humiliated and degraded by his political friends ae his political opponents could never have humiliated and degraded him; and he bas kept silent. an * MALS

He has seen every principle that he ad- vocated trempled under foot, by his own associates ; and he has held his peace.

He bas seen every pledgethat he made on behalf of bis party, repudiated or con- temptuously broken and dishonoured ; and he has net opened his wouth.

The very scum of both political parties laugh the great champion of Liberal prin- ciples to scorn and whisper in his ear “Samson, the Philistines be upon thee !” And the strong man, to all all appearance, is shorn and bound and blind.
