A sensation has been created in the

Straits Settlements and the far east by”

| the sudden appearance of a new island | off the coast of Borneo, between Nemta-

kol and Lumbdidan. The island is 45 feet high, a third of a mile long and a quarter of a mile wide. For the most part the island is merely an upheaval of the bottom of the sea, but atits high- est point there is a distinct mud crater, with the cone shaped top and sides fali- enin. The sides of the cone give evi- dence of having been forced up througla acrevice in solid rock. The British North Borneo Herald says the cone, which is 30 yards in diameter, is sur- rounded by another and larger cone, which shows that with more pressure from beneath a much larger crater would have been formed. The rising of the island was not accompanied by any volcanic disturbance. The crater is seamed with crevices and cracks, which emit gases. By applying a torch toa small crack in the crater the gas ignites and burns steadily.—Si. Louis Globe- Deimocrat.

The handsomest dwarf this country has ever seen, the Countess Magri, for- merly Mrs. Tom Thumb, is still a well preserved woman, and bas just been giv- ing demonstrations of cookery at a food fair in Boston. She wore a small white apron, and while preparing the dishes on a raised platform lectured entertain- ingly about the cooking she had encoun- tered during her travels over the earth. The countess was born in Massachusetts 56 years ago, and her real name was Mercy Lavinia Bump. She was married in 18683 to General Tom Thumb, who died 14 years ago, his widow taking an- other husband, not a dwarf, several years later.—Boston Herald.

i Sea Birds Persecute a Land Bird,

A very singular thing happened om the last trip of the Kennebec to Boston. The steamer was off Cape Elizabeth when a dove, similar tothe common doves in the street, flew aboard. He re- mained there for some time, but was soon frightened off. Whenever he left the boat he was followed and chased by the sea gulls, until obliged to again light. At last, thoroughly tired out, and when night was approaching, he settled on the deck, crawled under one of the lifeboats and there remained until Boston was reached, when he flew off nove the worse for bis ride.—Ken- nebec Journal,
