HIGH COMMENDATION.

Sirn,—-Professor McQuarrie and Mirs Helena McDonal! deserve the thanksof the people of this city for the very fine en- tertainment entitled “The Carnival of Nations” given in the Opera House last wight. From the rice of the curtainto the cloxwof this fine exhibition of art, loveliness and music, the attention of the epectators was not allowed to wander. Every number on the lengthy programme was re.cdered perfectly and was properly appreciated and applauded. The whole entertainment was an acknowledgement of the highly cultivated taste of the ladies and gentleman who, Jast night, on the etage of the Opera House, in some cases, per - formed their parts so gracefully ani in other cases eo comically. Charlottetown is to be congratulated upon their possession of so mach talent, and Professor McQuarrie, Miss MéDonaid, and the executive atatt upon the ability to give to our people the high-class entertainment of last night, Those who fai! to be present at the rec. si pre-entation of the Carnival of N atious will lose a great deal.

Toc Mucn Caxe Watx—The Evan:- ville, Ind., Despatch says: The death of Mise Rosa Storker, which occurred in this cty last night, ie said to have been due to exessive cake walking. The young lady was regarded as one of the most graceful cake-walkers in the city avd spent almost every night in the pas- time. A few evenings ago she participated in a cake-walk and the next morning was seriously ill. A physician was called and he pronounced the disease peritonitis, and said it was caused by the young lady’s frequent cuke-swaking. It is said this is the second death in this city in the last six months caused by excessive cake-~ walking. Miss S’orker was alively girl of sixteen.

THE CARNIVAL OF NATIONS.

It was a large and fashionable audience which assembled at the Opera House iast evening when “The Caruiyal of Nations” was produced under the direction of Pro- tessor McQuarrie assisted by Miss Heleoa Macdousld and her pupils, and everyone

was delighted with the entertainment furoisbed. From the opening number—a

Nationa! Drill participated in by some forty young people of both sexes appropriately costumed and bearing various flags—to the cake walk at the close, the performers heid the undivided attevtion of the audience. All the dances!were performed with an ease and grace indicating thorough training and the grouping of th varioas characters par ticipating was very artistic. The programme included the Highland Fling, Sword dance, Spanish dance, Japanese dance, Trish jig, Duteb clog and the stately minu- et,—for all of which Vinnicombe’s orchestra, with Miss Lottie Belloran at the piano, furnished excellent music. Mies Helena Macdonald aud Frotessuor Mc- Quarrie each exbibiied superior skill io tneis individual performances. The little ones also danced exceptionaliy well ; and the minuet, danced in colonial cos- tume, was an exceedingly pretty feature. The dancing of the Dutch clog and the Irish jig, was also good;—but whea ail did so well it would bardly be fair to single ont any for special meation. Six couples took part in the burlesque cake walk at the close—the cake being awarded to Mr. Peter Jackson and Miss Geergie Lightfoot (Mr. Cyrus Clarke and Mr. Jack Davies) who receivep tbe most applause. During the evening Protessor McQuarrie and Miss Annie Murpby played a banjo duet, “Phantom Serenade,” with much skill, and received well merited applause. The performance will be repeated tonight when a large su- dience is expected. Those who wich to pass an enjoyable evening should make a point of attending.

Measervey, who ia about to leave this province for the west, was last evening presented with an address and gold- headed cane by Charlottetown Lodg-, of the lodependest Order of Good Temp~ lars, of which he has long been a promi- nentmember. Mr. Messervey, to whom the presentation was a great surprise, acknowledged the kindness ina becoming manner. He is a young man of good character and excellent ability and shouid do well wherever he may go.
