MONTREAL (CP) — Prices were mixed to generally higher with mainly fractional changes at the close of the Montrsal and Canadian stock exchanges Fri- day.

Among firmer papers, Eddy A dropped 7 to 63%. Abitibi rose 1% to 37%, and Howard Smith was up one point to 41. Consoli- dated Paper rose % to 41%.

Utilities were mixed; Gatineau Power dropped a point at 38'2, while Quebec Power rose a point at 40. Other changes were frac- tional.

Metals were generally higher. Rises of % were noted in Argus at 38, Asbestos at 28, Canada Iron at 33% and Canada Bronze at 2234. Steels were steady.

Banks slipped a bit. Royal lost % at 8.

In foods two new lows were hit by Loblaw’s A at 32% down %, and Loblaw’'s B at 3242, down ‘2.

Labatts hit a new low at 27%, down 1%. Other beverages rose; Molson's A at 26% and Molson's B at 26 each rose '.

Penny issues were finm.New Hosco rose 24 cents at 1.00. Abit- ica gained 17 cents at 69, and Or chan seven cents at 1.00.

The closing averages show banks off 0.06 at 67.21, utilities off 0.8 at 158.0, industrials up 1.3 at 313.9, combined up 0.5 at 260.2, papers up 7.6 at 455.7 and golds unchanged at 88.35.

NEW YORK

NEW YORK (AP) — The pro- posed merger of Texaco with Su- perior Oil of California provided some excitement ih a dull and irregular stock market Friday.

The merger, if it goes through, would create a firm with com- bined operations controlling an estimated 8 per cent of total oil production in the United Staes.

Texaco’s proposed akeover of Superior Oil would be on the basis of 2% shares of Teaxo for each share of Superior. Texaco rose steadily to a net gain of 4% to close at 79%. —~

Superior Oil closed with a gain of 105 points, putting the closing price at 1,825.

Aircrafts ended with moderate gains. :

Steel wound up the day with a mixed pattern.
