At the election on Thursday in South Dorset the Tory candidate defeated the Gladstonian by only forty. The’ Liberals polled 752 more votes than at the last elec- tion, and the Tories 199 less.

The by-elections have dispelled the idea that the Government is sure of a large majority, and it is ascertained that the ministry have decided against an early dissolution.
