The decision to found such an institution and to place at its head a person so inexperienced could have been made only after long prayer and meditation. His decision has never been regretted.

Father Angus was born in st. Columbs parish. East Point. in 1631. His exceptional abilities were

early recognized and he was sent from his home school to the Cen-I tral Academy in Charlottetown where he excelled in his studies. soon we find him beginning the long trek to Quebec to commence his theological studies in the Sem- inary of Quebec, His stay therc, however, was destined to be a short one for his health broke down and he was forced to return home. When he arrived he took up resi- dence with the Bishop at Rustico. Under the kind tutelage of the Bishop he continued the study of Theology. This was his preparation for the heavy rxponslbility which developed upon him as the first Rector oi at. Dunatan's College. We can only imagine with what. strange fort-bodings he set out for hl.s new post. The trip from Rustlco by horse and sleigh in the dead of winter must have been a long one, affording him a.mpie owortimity to look into the future. His fears were probably somewhat allayed by the ready wit of his Irish as- sistant - James Ph.-lien. The sight which met the eyes of those two young men as they ap- pl0IChOd the college must have

been a disheartening one. It is true

that s. magnificent building - magnlflcent for those days - had been prepared for them. But an empty building can be unprepos- seaslng.

When that building is large and cold it can be forbidding. Yet these men must convert this large. cold, empty building into a home- a home not only for themselves but also for their future students. Here was to be an institution of lzarnlng but there were no stu- dents and no ll-brary. Father Angus had probably never had ac- cess to a large store of books and so the lack of a library might not frighten him. Father James, how- ever, had been educated in Ire- land where, even at this early date, education was well advanced. Here was to be a training house for future priests but there was no priest to guide the students. Truly, this was s. sorry sight.

These were men of pioneer spirit The forebearca of Father Angus were rugged Scotsman who had left their native country in search of adventure and freedom. Father James was an Irishman who bid himself left his native shores to seek richer harvests in the mis- sion flelds nl his Master. This pioneer spirit and firm faith, coupled with their natural abilities, enabled them to convert the cold. empty building into a home. an institution of learning. a training house for future priests.

January 17, l856 must. have been a gala day for the Diocese of Charlottetown for on that day the first. students registered at st. Dunstan's College. Bishop Mac- Donald and a number of theclergy were present to welcome the stu- dents and to give encouragement to the young Rector and his As- sistant. When the tumult had sub- sided. Father Angus could appraise the situation. Eighteen students had registered. The finished part of the building was filled to capacity. There was the prospect of the long, cold winter ahead. There was the feeling of insecurity which anyone must feel on the commencement of n new position. But. the work must go on. To- morrow. classes begin.

The first winter must have been it particularly trying one for the new Rector, Coupled with the heavy schedule of teaching was the. even heavier burden of ad- ministration. The buidlng had to be heated - not an easy tan in the days of wood-burning stoves. Light and food had to be supplied for the students. Plans had to be laid for the completion of the building. Needless to sew, the funds were not plentiful. Fr. Angus was possessed of an in- domitable spirit but this could not take the place of A robust physical constitution and be-for: the winter had passed his health broke down comI:iel.edly.

The following summer finds him with his beloved Bishop at Ru-stico. Here, the fresh air and salt water combined with freedom from care. helped him to recoup his nhyllcal resources. Indeed. his health im- proved so much that he was able in return to St. Dunstan's as Roc- tor, This time. however, he came as t'F'athz-r" Angus for, on Nov. zlst, he had been ordained in the Priesthood by Bishop MacDonald.

The next fifteen years in the life of Father Angus were not un- eventful. He was not a person who could for long be forgotten by the public. Yet the greatest part of his work will never be told for it consisted of the quiet every-my task of guiding the destiny of the

college. There was the continuous task of providing a staff in a Diocese where there was a con- trnuoin shortage of clergy. This is a work which does not catch the public eye. It is the work of a man devoted to duty, of a man who is willing to exchange mortal tears and hardships for eternal Joy. 0 I 0

If Father Angus was busy at the Collage, and busy he was, it did not prevent him from entering the lists in defense of the Church - both local ond unl- rersal A perusal of the local news- papers of the day shows that here was no mediocre man in matters controversial. His clarity of expression and logical approach combined with his power of in- vective to make him a man feared by his enemies. His brilliant in- sight into matters theological is but another indication of his in- tellcctual calibre. When the autumn of 1069 came arolmd, Father Angus could look back on fourteen years of hard- ship and suffering but also on fourteen years of achievement. The institution which had been born on that day in 1866 with 13 students had now grown from an infant to an 3d0lC8Ccsst with an enrollment of 59. The future was bright for the College. Although still a young man he was prepar- ed to relinquish the reins to an- other. with the soceaaion of his successor, Father James MacDon- ald, a new chapter was begun in the history of St. Dunstan's Col- Iege. After his retirement as Rector, Father Angus set out for Rome where he ,u.ssi.sted as theologian to the Bishop at the Vatican Council. Upon his return from Rome he was appointed the first resident pastor of Fort Augustus. He held this post until 1877. For the last twelve years of his life his health left much to be desired. The early years of hard- ship had taken their toll and on 29th of April IBN, he passed ;. way in Charlottetown.
