Terry became docile on hearing this. She imagined that Sheridan would be annoyed if she fell over- board, or hurt herself so seriously that she could not go ashore with him when the time came. The trip would in that case have been wasted, and she would have done him no good after all. But Mrs. I-larkness put it down to sheer, good-child obedience that the girl should submit her will without a struggle. Her gentleness, her cour- age. her reluctance to make trouble, combined with the necessity to act the nurse for her, softened the last hard edge of the old woman's heart. She found herself thinking of her, charge as “the child," instead of "the creature." She had to remind herself that the girl wasn't what she, seemed, to prevent her hands from patting and stroking :and she often had to bite back caressing little words that wanted to come. No, the girl simply could not be what she seemed! And yet-Mrs.

THE TAMING OF HARKY

The taming of the old lioness had been slow, almost imperceptible at first, and had come about through a series of small shocks. little sur- prises. She harl expected that the spoiled hussy would be exacting of her time and patience, but the crea- ture never asked for any service.

How it managed ‘to fasten its frocks at the back. Mrs. Karkness couldn't conceive; but it did fasten them. And it never put upon her the expected indignity of lacing or but- tohing its shoes.

I had a lovely visit with our W. C. T. U. President, Mrs. Kelsey, on January 3i. in Ram Allah, her home. Mr. Kelsey gave us briefly the history of the Maccabees, and said that the town of the first Maccabee. Judah Ha-Maccabee, is not far from Jerusalem, the Holy City in a place called Battlr. Those brave men of so long ago, and those glorious days. when the Jews were free, are brought to mind to- day by the Hebru. Youth a 2 they are inspired and thrilled, Why not? We have the Hapaels, another Jewish sports association, and some of them are helping us to fight the liquor menace inside the old city. The l-Iapoels have a nice hall. a gift

It rained and rained all day and I was riot hopeful that many would come. I prepared tea for ten, my faith let me go that far. Well 29 came and the twpot had to be le- plenished many times. Dr. Thomas. of Nazareth, had prepared a good paper on “The effect of Alcohol on the body." which was read by Mrs. Thomas, also an M. D. D, Thomas will read this paper before the young men later.

Since my last letter to you I have been in Bethlehem, Jericho. Jaffa and Tel-Avlv. I go to Haifa again for two weeks work this month. I shall probably take Yedldah with me. She is getting keener and keener in our cause.

Hero is my tentative program in broad outline for the next few months- Jericho, Jerusalem, Haifa; Nazareth, February; Trans- Jorda, March; Jerusalem and environments April: Syria, May.

Have rented a new home for the next twelve months beginning from the middle of April, We have out- grown the present headquarters- Our new place has a drawing room which will seat at lezst 200. It is an old house but well built, and will be comfortable for my friends and for me. also accommodations for our meetings. I always have some pres- sing needs. Just now we need a piano. Many of our young people love music, and this would be a great attraction. If I were in Ir. ‘ t I feel sure I could borrow one. We may be able to rent one here.
