The following despatch appears iu the daily press, dated Windsor, Feb. 23, 1895: **Victor Meron, who left Essex County with his wife and family and settled on a farm in Michigan, returned this morning and, according to his own statement, is a poorer but a much wiser man. He stated to the reporter that he lost while away fully $5,000 and advises anyone who thinks he can better his condition by leaving this country to take a trip across the river before sell- ing out his interests here. “It is impos- sible for me to tell you what we have suffered,” he said, while his house- hold goods were being examined at the

ferry dock; ‘‘but I can truthfully say that I have come to stay, and have concluded that Canada

There was a time when the stream was going the other way, and the people here were erving for annexa- tion or free trade, but that time has past, and those who are in a position to know say that not more than a dozen in this city would favor annexation or political union if a vote were to be taken on the question.”

Mr. Laurier ought to write a kindly fetter to this man telling him of all the beauties of English free trade and un- restricted reciprocity.

If the men of Canada should by any chance adopt Mr. Laurier’s fads they will be sicker even as a result than this Victor Meron.

If man at the very beginning was hir sute, when did he afterward yearn to get rid of at least a portion of his hair? That brings us down at once to shaving. At first the hairs on the jaws and chin must have been plucked out singly. Could a process of this kind, carried out during immeasurab’e periods, have produced a comparatively beardless race, as are our Indians? If man shaved first with a shell or a bit of flint, his sufferings must have been intense. Prehistoric men in Great Britain, Ireland, France and Italy used bronze razors, for we find them to-day. Generally these razors had a tang, with a whole in the tang, sothat they could be suspended. The razors are rounded on th; edge, and resemble in shape those of the Chinesey—New York Times. ;

A DIPHTHERIA SCARE.

There is no doubt but that diphtheria at this season in its worst form is prevalent in many cities and small towns, At the same time, that fact is no reason for fright ening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Hundreds of per- sons are said to have had diphtheria who only had a severe sore throat. The form of sore which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people call quinsy. sore throat,” known long before diphtheria An old hospital nurse in Boston, says: “It ain't the clear cold of winter that lays peo- ple up with colds, catarrh and sore throats, and lays the childrea low with diphtheria ; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet, slushy days.” This is very true, be- cause then the air is laden with poisonous vapors. The first symptoms of true diph- theria there is fever, some stupor, and dif- ficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are often felt in the neck glands, just below theear. The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which increase and turn to a dirty yellow or brown color. Very many reliable peo- ple claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Lini- ment. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because we know from experience it will cureacommon scre throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catarrh bronchitis, croup, etc., as promptly.
