A Woman on the Scaffold.

SHRIEKING WITH TERROR AS SHE IS DRAGGED T) HER DOOM.

A horrible hanging occurred on the 26th instant, at Lincoln, Eagland. The victim was Mrs. Leftley, who poisoned her husband last fall,and was duly con victed and sentenced at Lincolnshire sessions.

She was re- stored to cunsciousness and the hang- man began to prepare her for the gal- lows by pinioning her elbows and fixing a strap loosely around her skirts to be tightened about her ankles after she had walked ‘to the seaffold- Mrs. Leflley fought desperately te prevent these re- straints, and gave utterance to frightful yells, which Swere heard outside the massive walls of the jail. On the way to the seaffold the screams of the con- demoed woman were almost maniacal, eod drowned the voice of the prison chaplain who was reciting the prayers for the dying. When she was piaced upon the trap she continued to scream and incoherently avow her innocence unti) the white cap was pulled down over her mouth and stified her voice. Then the trap fell,the woman was drop- ped into the well, and in a few minutes was pronounced dead. The usual in- quest was held and the corpse was buried in the jail yard and covered with quicklime. Contrary tothe usual cus- tom, po representatives of the press were admitted to the jail-yard,and very contradictory stories are told by the mecical men and other official witnes ses of the execution. All the facts as stated above are admitted bv the witnesses, but some of them state in ad- dition that hangman Binns was un- necessarily and barbarously brutal in his treatment of the unhappy woman. According to their statements he knocked her down in the pinioning- room and choked her until her face was livid, in order to stop her screaming. The London papers generally condema the exclusion of the press, and say that this disgracetul scene furnishes another and quite sufficient reason forthe dis- missal of the drunken brute Binns from the office of official hangman. ————————- oe

Miss Nellie Belmont, a young girl from Virginia, died at Mount Hope insane asylum Baltimore, Md., on Satur- day. While there visiting triends some yearsago she became engaged to a young cote He was too poor to marry ber and went to Chicago to try to get a practice. She was to remain there until he was able to take her to a comfortable home. She taught music and worked at dress-making. Her health steadily failed, but she did not mention the fact to her lover Two weeks ago she was prostrated by a severe attack | of malarial fever. Her actions were’so wild that her friends were forced to send her to Mount Hope. A reaction at once set in and she died in convulsions. On the same day # telegram was receiv- ed from the young physician jn Chicago saying that he was coming to take her to his new home, having acquired a lu- crative practice. He arrived next day. When he learned how her faithfulness

had brought on her illness, he seemed heart-broken. He returned at one to the West.

In conversation with Mrs. Ada Reed, recently elected a justice of the peace a Liverpool, Pennsylvania, she said: “It it is true that Ihave taken the oath of office, huve my commission and intend fulfilling the duties of my officefto the best of my abilities. I was elected as a so-called joke; but I took the oath in. stead of the would-be slur. I have not done any business as yet on account of having no docket, The legality of my holding the office is likely to be tested. It did take courage,and a great amount of it, toallow my name to have so much publicity, but since I have been elected I intend to faithfully perform the duties of the office if I can legally do so.” Mrs. Reed is a lady of marked intelligence and respectability.

Among the 86,000 non-commissional officers and men constituting the British home army on the lst of January, and including all young soldiers,were under 5 feet Sinches in beight 10,622; between that and 5 feet 6 inches, 11,944; be- tween 5feet 6 inches and 5 jeet 7 in- ches there were 15,810, and nearly the same number, or 15,490 5 feet 8 inches or an inch under; between 5 feet 8 in- ches and 5 feet 9 inches therefwere 12,- 763; between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inehes and 5 feet 11, 5,373. About that height there were only 5,000 men, and one-fifth are in the Household Cavalry, of whom 665 are over, and 178:less than an inch under, 6 feet. In the Guards, notwithstandiog the lowering of the standard trom 5 feet 8 inches; there are but 505 men between 5 feet 7 inches, the new, and 5 feet 8 inches, the old, minium. In the matter of the chest measurement there were 2,376 uuder 33 inches and 5,515 between that and 34 inches. Foreachn inereus- ed inch above that the respective num- bers are 13,796, 16,303, 17,106, and 13,690. Above 38 inches; the number are, of course, much less.
