I wish to say further that the purpose of all this reedin‘, ritin‘, and 'rithmetic, the purpose of controlled play in the public schools, the purpose of the well balanced curriculum which you as l1 school have been studying, is to so impart to you the social in- lieritance oi’ the race, that there will be no break between your school life and your larger life as you grow, and that you may develop social character and the highest social emciency. in plain words. you go to school to fit yourselves for the best possible life, not for selfish motives. bllt in order that you be enabled to make the great- est contribution to society.
