We hear a great deal these days of our puritan fore- fathers, but little concerning the wives and moth- ers who janded at Plymouth Rock and founded that colony which was destined to play such a large part in our history

In 1621 Elder Cushman wrote from Plymouth that he ‘“‘would not advise any ane to come here who were not con- tent to spend their time, labors and endeavors for the benefit of those who shall come after, quitely con- tenting them- selves with such hardships and difficul- ties as shall fall upon them.’’

What self-renunciation and heroic purpose was this! They drowned witches to be sure, but that was no part of their puritanism. It is to the puritan women we owe so much for that spirit in our people which gives them the fortitude to endure hardship and stake life and fortune for their convictions.

The American women of to-day have the their puritan mothers, but their constitutions are not rugged or able to en- dure half the hardships of these New Eng- land ancestors. Very often they are run- down with weaknesses and irregularities peculiar to their sex, and ghe constant drain upon their vitality makes them chronic in- valids. Many women hesitate to go to their family physician, because they dread the local examinations so generally insisted upon by practitioners,

Y., giving a full description of their symptoms, history, etc., so that he can give them the best possible medical advice. Mr. Dobson is a government official. For the last 41 years he has spent his days at the board of trade and for near- ly 30 of them given his evenings to lit- erary work. His usual babit after din- ner is to read or listen to music until 10 o’clock, when he goes to his study and writes until midnight. He regards tais literary work as his recreation.

He has a large and clever family. His eldest son is teaching in China, his eldest daughter, who isa backelor of music, has been working among the Bombay Parsees under the missionary settlement for university women, and another daughter is studying medicine. —New York Tribune.

Feeding the Angier.

There is just one fish in the aquarium that is actually fed like a child, and it is the very last fish that one would expect to see fed in that manner; it is the angler. The angler is voracious exough naturally, but it rarely feeds in captivity. Its feed- ing habits are peculiar. It will take ina fish for food, extract from it alt the nutri- iment and then reject the remainder. Taking advantage of its habits in this re- spect to supply it with sustenance, the angler at the aquarium is lifted to the sur- face of the waterin a big scoop net, its capacious mouth is opened, and a fish, perhaps a herring we'ghing a pound, is put into it. The angler takes all the nutri- tive substance from a fish thus fed to it.— New York Sun.
