SALTS, AND DIES AFTER A WEEK OF AGONY. Winiford Smith, a bright, intelligent

youth of 18, died on Thursday evening last in terrible agony atthe residence of hig sister, Mrs. Wasson; St. Jotin, N’ B., hav- ing just & week previously taken a dose of ehlorate of potash in mistake for Ruchelle salts. About three weeks agu, in answer to an advertisement of T, Youngciaus, Wini- tord Smith, of Harvey, Albert County, went to St. Juhn, and secured a position in

that establishment. He was a fine- looking young fellow, robust, strong, and by his geniality and obliging dis- position was soon as great a favorite in the establishment as he’ wad i

the family circle Gf his sistér, Mrs. Wasson, with whom he stopped since his arrival in the city. On Thursday night week he went home trom the store, and, beside natural weariness, felt slightly indisposed, Acting upon the advice of some one in the house, he proceeded to take a dose of Rochelle salts. Instead of getting that, however, he took an equal portion of chlorate of potash by mistake. He did not feel any ill effects that night, and next day went to his work as usual. During the day he went to the residence of Mr. Youngclaus, who was ill, and inquired after him. Dur- ing his stay at the house both Mr. and Mrs. Youngelaus noticed something strange in

the young man’s ‘donk ~ and com- mented upon it, but thought nothing

further of it until that evening when they were informed that he was dangerous- ly ill. Dr. Berryman worked all night with him aud next Jay he was better but unable to go to work. During the next few days both he and bis friends thought he was improving, but on Thursday morn- ing, shortly after 8 u'clock, the summons came. His sister, in an adjoining room, heard Winiford call her sharply, and hurry- ing to his side she sawehim die in less than five minutes. Slowly but surely the terrible dose of potash had done its fatal work and the youth who less than a month before went to the city full of hope,strength and spirit was, on Saturday, borne back to his bereaved parents a corpse.
